Reloading the 6.5mm Creedmore

Post by fartbacker » 01 May 2017, 4:24 pm

Guys, request clarification on O'Give for various rounds. Am working with the Creedmore round but my query is pertinent to all rounds. Have measured factory Hornady 143gr ELD-X which has an COAL of 2.820 and an O'Give of 2.161. I am only going to re-load for 85g Sierras and 123g Hornady SST's. Do not have the Tikka T3X A1 as yet, some weeks for the second shipment to arrive so cannot measure my chamber to lands ATM. But will make up a batch of factory equiv rounds to test at these lower weights. I have made up ten 85g with an O'Give of 2.161 matching the factory O'Give COAL is 2.585 do not think the 46 grains of AR-2209 are compressed visually. For the SST's at 123g they have a Cannelear thus will have a forced O'Give of 2.017 and COAL of 2.605 (the latter probably answers my question) (44g of 2209). Am thinking I am fine for the 2.161 and 2.017 and can increase the base to O'Give once I know the actual chamber size / distance to lands. Woffled on a bit here but anyone most cunning may see what I am on about - Fart

Bugger, my first post and was more of a statement that a request for confirmation of my belief...lol. Anyways, went for 85g, 46g of AR22098 and an ogive of 2.161 the same as factory 143g but of course with less hold on the round but about 3\16th. With the 123g forced to go with 2.043 ogive due to cannelure with 44g of AR2209 not complressed and crimped with Lee crimping die. Once I have the T3X (still a month or so away), will measure the chamber to lands and for future rounds take the ogive up as far as I can. Will crono the 85 , 123 and 143 when running in and sighting the scope...

What does the cannelure have to do with your seating depth?

Thanks for reply bladeracer, that go me re-reading my notes. Am under the impression that one can ignore COAL when the projectile has a cannelure and one needs / should roll crimp into it. Taking into account potential over pressure.

You don't need to crimp, a cannelure just offers the option without having to dig your crimping die into the jacket.
Cannelures are generally set at the standard seating depth for that round.

Crimping can be beneficial or could do nothing or can even make things worse. It's up to you to experiment.

Cannuler is intended to prevent the projectile moving under recoil. Generally not required IMO. More popular with tube magazines.
They have the added benefit of helping to hold the projectile together during impact.

The only caliber I've got that needs crimping is the 6.5x52mm Carcano with the big 160gn RN. Under recoil the rounds in the mag tend to swallow their bullets :-)

I wouldn't go loading too many rounds up until you get the rifle. Prep all your brass, ready for powder and projectile and wait for the rifle.
My 6.5 Creedmoor seems to like my preferred bullets seated 0.005" off the lands.(108 and 137gr Lapua Scenar) Shoots 140gr Hornady ELD's best 0.002" off.
That's in a custom barrel, 1 in 7.5" twist with "match" chamber.

Guys, thanks for the replies, I felt obliged to crimp these 123g Hornady SST's as they had a Cannelure present and they sit about half an inch into the case. Will take on board all comments, particularly waiting until I have the firearm and can measure the changer. Will also re-think the 44g of AR2209 with this projectile and start a way further down the scale with less powder. Thanks again and will follow up when I have something to feedback on my learnings - fart
