Interchangeable barrels and seating depth

Post by fuggle » 03 Dec 2013, 1:58 pm

Sorry if this is in the wrong section. Sort of a gunsmithing/reloading/rifle question so wasn't sure where was best... Mods please move if in the wrong section.

Question is - When reloading we all know that 'just' of the lands is typically the best seating depth.

With interchangeable barrels, is there a lug or something in place that ensures its tightened to the exact same place each time?

Is it possible to screw the barrel on a little more or less than ideal which would be changing how many thou the lands are from the bullet?

This might be of interest to you... Changing the barrel on a Sako quad.

http://www.sako.fi/sakoquad_barrelchange.php

The way the Sako works the barrel slots in, then is held in with a screw so the depth is the same. It doesn't screw it (so can't be inserted at different lengths into the action).

That's small calibre stuff though.

What about big centre fire stuff? Surely that needs more than a single allen bolt?

Thanks Seik.

Sucks that with that system the barrel lifts up so you have to remove your scope and resight.

Bugger all that. Better to just buy 2 rifles.

My switch barrel rifles just screw in with the same torque every time so headspace should be uniform each time. When the action hits the face if the barrel a firm push on a 300mm long spanner is all that's required or around 80-100foot points of torque depending on what your gunsmith reccomends

There are hundreds of target rifles with interchangeable barrels so it won't worry most of us hunters

I should say this is with Remington style actions, not actions with a barrel nut which changes headspace
