Dent in reloaded brass

Post by schink » 04 Dec 2013, 11:56 am

G'day guys,

Novice reloader here and not sure what I've done to get this, but here it is.

I notice some of my hand loads which are all 1-2 shot brass which has been full resized have a few small dings and dents in the brass.

Just minor stuff, not long lines like it got banged on the corner of the desk or anything. I almost missed them in fact.

Just not sure what I've done?

And hopefully they're still fine to shoot?

I would say you've just got a bit of debris in the press.

Bit of grit, or even a little pocket of case lube maybe.

Next time you do a batch just set aside 20 brass or so and make sure they're all clean before you size them. Put them through and pay close attention and see what the result is.

I suspect they'll come out fine which will show it was just a bit of debris or whatever.

Could be something as simple as banging on the scope or action during case ejection.

It happens...

Any chance of a picture?

Not sounding like a problem so far though if the dents are as small as you indicate.

Usually, too much lube, when FLSizing will crease the brass.

Lube must be thin and minimal, I use a squirt of cheap fly spray.
Should be ok to fire, unless you are load testing just shoot them off and go again.

Are they just around the necks or shoulders?

Just randomly up and down the body as far as I can tell.

Doesn't sound like anything worth worrying about to me.

Normal wear and tear?

Sounds like it to me too.

Mine get little blips and marks on them just from ejection or dropping them or rolling around with the empties and so on.

I think I've worked it out.

I've noticed it happened on a few when the brass was harder to put through, and more so on a few I was necking down.

I think the problems actually too little lube on a few, and the brass will go through the press with some force but on the stickier ones the shoulder/body gets a slight crease it in.

Lesson learned anyway :)
