9mm JHP in 357 mag

Post by Medic » 09 Jun 2017, 1:19 am

Hey guys. Long time rifle reloader and 9mm reloader.
I want to know if someone actually has some empirical evidence or results from shooting 9mm jacketed bullets in a 357 magnum revolver or carbine. I have a 357/38 revolver carbine and notice it's hard to find 357 jacketed projectiles for sale in 125 grain. I have considered pushing them with 2205 to help seal the 1 thou gap. I know it can be done but wanted to get opinions.
No I haven't slugged my barrel.
im just looking for better JHP options in 125 grain, their ain't match out there and since it's a rifle will be pushing fast so I have concerns over berrys.

Thanks for any input.

Adi used to sell projectiles in ammo tins marked 9mm/38 and we ran them through a Marlin 357 a Rossi 357 a Dan Wesson 357 a Colt Python 357 and a Desert Eagle 357 and they worked fine with no accuracy issues, Never tried them in a 9mm . I wish they still sold them.

What diameter are the 9mm? Can run .356dia up to .358 in 38/357 no worries but not the .355 from what been told. They say probably lose accuracy though using the .356 stuff but thats to be determined I guess.
I was using some RN from a local caster and he sold them to suit both 9mm and 38/357 without changing diameters worked fine for my use on 25m range.

I haven't tried it myself but I would certainly give it a go.

I think he was asking what diameter are the 9mm bullets he intends to use.

I was as I have seen .354 .355 .356 and .357 used in 9mm sizing. Also .356 .357 and .358 in 38/357.

Hi Medic...
e. I have a 357/38 revolver carbine ....
Just on a side note, how do you find the revolver carbine?
I presume it is the Alfa. Any malfunction?...any problems? Why do you think they are not popular?

Some years ago, I reloaded 38 special +P+ with some bullets 9mm (.355" ) FMJ 124 grains. Shooting bullets .355" from a .357 barrel, a SMITH & Wesson 686 with 6", an then I checked that they were flying slower than the 38 special bullets JHP 125grains with the same amount of powder, and the 9mm bullets groups were not as precise as I expected..
I think that the smaller diameter of the 9mm bullets allowed leaks of gas at the .357" barrel, the bullets hit the target with more spread than I wanted.
So If you reload 38 or 357 cartridges with 9mm bullets, it will work, but you will have issues of lack of power and precision.
