What are you going to upgrade next? and what too??

Post by Mulder030 » 05 Aug 2017, 8:22 am

So I thought I start the broad conversation of ' What are you going to upgrade next?' & 'What too?'
I was sitting there last night prepping some brass, more precisely trimming brass with the very basic and cheap Lee's 2 piece hand trimmer. ($18 I think, and not with the wooden handle)

By the end of it I was ready to throw it across the shed. I am wanting to go out today and buy a more solid bench mounted manual hand trimmer. Thinking either hornady of RCBS. Keeping in mind the cost, I can't go dropping large amounts with a wedding soon approaching. As I don't load as many as other, I am trying to increase my reloading quantities. So would be interested to hear what other get the sh!ts with after sitting at the bench for a while.

Have you tried Lee's Quick Trim Dies? Fastest trimming I've found.

I use the lee ones with a battery drill, i do have a wooden handle/ball thing. I've been thinking about something mounted on the bench to clean primer pocket, maybe with a foot control switch....

I use this method and setup or I use my RCBS case trimmer with a drill attached to speed up the process, both work very well and are quick.

That quite a smart process with the drill press.
Thanks Bigfella

Your welcome, it works a treat and is quick and easy to use which is right up my alley especially for the $$$ I don't think you'd find a quicker and cheaper way of doing it.

I have one very similar but a Simple. Made of cast iron I think. I put it in my vice when I use it.

I would go for the trimmer that Bentaz recommend. Lee quick trim is alright. Problem is when you are heavily invested and have a collection of trim dies, and buy a rifle in some obscure caliber that has no quick trim die. Then you'd need to get a generic trimmer, so I'd go there from the start. I am in this situation now. Pay once, cry once and get proper equipment from the start.

I haven't got one at all yet, but adding a neck turning kit would be the next thing in upgrading my reloading setup in general.

I'm upgrading my 22-250 14 twist to 22 dasher with a 1 in 8 twist to shoot heavier pills

Gwion I have a rebel 17 and cant fault it, beautiful shiny brass, a bit more expensive but does up to 17 lb at a time, the trick with stainless tumblers is you have to use lemi shine in them or the cases will not be really shiny, if I was to knock the stainless tumblers at all it would be about how clean the inside of the necks are and how they can be a bit graby if that is what you would call it, some people use a bit of graphite on the insides of the neck to over come this so neck tension is ok

A/ I'm on a very limited budget
B/ I only load up 100-200 at a time

So, a small tumbler will do it for me but all my funds are otherwise allocated for the foreseeable future.

not sure you understood what I meant sungazer, the stainless tumblers are very good, and yes they clean inside as good as outside, probably why I own one,
but by saying grabby I mean that the case necks can have differing neck tension because the inside grabs the projectiles differently because they are so clean and that is why some people use a bit of graphite inside the neck when loading to create some slip that you would usually get from the carbon layer left in a fired case neck.
I like to have as smooth let go of the bullet that can be when firing the shot to try to be consistent
I must admit I am anal about a few loading procedures that others say is a waste of time, each to there own though hey
