First reloading kit

Post by guy pepper » 10 Dec 2013, 12:47 pm

Hi all, so I am new to reloading I am looking for a kit that will do my .22 .223 .243 .308, this will be for a LITTLE competition shooting but mainly hunting.

I have been looking at;
Tumbler - SR737 NanoTumbler by SmartReloader
Breech Lock Challenger Press Kit with Auto Prime
Includes:
Challenger Breech Lock single stage press
1 Breech Lock Die Bushing
Lee Safety Scale
Perfect Powder Measure
Powder Funnel
Lock Stud and Cutter
Lee chamfer tool
Primer Pocket Cleaner
Auto-Prime XR
Set of Auto-Prime Shellholders
Tube of Sizing Lube

308 Win FL Die Set by Lee
Tumbler Media - Tuff Nut (2.75 lb) Lyman

I am just going to start with the 308 then will get more dies for the others later.

Is there anything else I will need?
is this a good kit?
is there a better kit?

thanks guys/girls
appreciate the any help

Reloading dies are the critical element I find.

A tumbler is a tumbler. As long as scales are accurate that's all that matters and so on.

There are good and bad (or perhaps unsuitable is a better term (dies which sometimes create a dent on the bullets, or cause seating depth problems with particularly long bullets or hollow points.

Lee dies are well regarded though.

What TechC said is on the money IMO.

I've used Hornady dies in the past for my .308 and found they imprinted a ring around the bullets I was using. This may well not be the case for bullets with a different OGIVE, but they didn't work for me.

I can't remember the make, but as above there are dies where the cavity is not high enough and if you're using long hollow point match bullets (as an example) their tips can vary slightly, if the die isn't high enough and is seating the bullet by pressing the tip instead of the body of the bullet that will give you inconsistent seating depths.

Nosler Custom Competition are one bullet that the tips vary in slightly that I know of. Can't remember the die brand I'm thinking off.

I use the RCBS Rock Chucker supreme kit.

Not for any other reason really that a friend who got me into reloading had the same kit and I went with it straight away.

RCBS dies also, and a Hornady tumbler. I use the Lyman Tuff Nut media as well.

You're missing a reloading manual.

That's a must for new reloaders.

Which is "the best" kit is one of those conversations which you could have forever and get no where.

Tonnes of people have good results with RCBS, others with Lee, others with Hornady and so on.

Less time talking and more time reloading IMO :)

Everything you've listed there is decent and will be plenty for you to start pumping out accurate hand loads.

Good luck.
