Shotgun shell crimp styles and differences

Post by mahna » 08 Aug 2017, 3:48 pm

I've done a bit of reading on crimping shotgun shells as it relates to reloading, not getting a clear picture though.

Read a few things and there are vague references to 'performance' but all seem to have the usual disclaimer of it coming down to personal preference to some extent.

Is there a definitive deal on this?

The two main types i know of, one is rolled crimp and and then the normal shotgun shell star crimp (not sure what proper name is) and you can poor wax in the end to hold slug in.

I found roll crimper hard to get, so made my own
Brought a Galvanised Round Plug for steel plumbing pipe from local hardware, then drilled a hole in the centre, found some 10mm round bar and put it in the hole and a tac weld to hold in place.

Can put in drill and just press down on shell softly till it rolls the edge over and hold longer for bigger crimp.
May not be perfect but works and costed like $3 plus 15 minutes of my time..

Something I've noticed is that bigger shot tends to be higher brass and 6 star and smaller shot low brass and 8 star.

Clever pete.

That'd cost you $80 if it was in a box at the local store

Running it through the drill, I guess the friction gives it a little heat to make it malleable under the pressure and that's what creates the roll?

That plastic is reasonably pliable anyway with a little pressure.

If a shot shell has been star crimped & fired can it be rolled crimped for the next reload?or do you have to start with new cases? Thanks
