Loose brass neck tension, pulled bullets and accuracy

Post by cooker » 13 Dec 2013, 5:16 pm

Hi all,

In need of some reloading advice.

I've recently taken a range of hand loads to the range for my .308. 7 different powder loads from starting to max powder charge.

Some were no good obviously, but one is a winner. I've pulled all the bullets from the left over loads that were no good and reloading them with the best powder charge.

Question is, the neck from the brass I've pulled bullets from is noticeably looser than the "fresh" loads.

The bullets are seated firm enough now, not going to budge without a bit of effort, so shouldn't be a problem.

How will this affect groups so if at all?

For best results, should I shoot "fresh" bullets together and re-seated bullets together? Or will mixing them not affect anything enough to bother?

Have you resized your necks before re seating the projectiles again ?

Shorter answer is yes, neck tension will effect your groups.

How much though? You'll need to shoot em and see.

Nope.

Bullet pulled, new powder charge done, then same bullet re-seated.

Neck turning, neck tension and accuracy was discussed in an earlier topic here - viewtopic.php?f=3&t=820

Baldrick314 has uploaded a bunch of pictures with his before/after shots on the neck turning to make the tension consistent.

Ok.... you need to resize your neck before reseating the projectile or your tention wont be right.

Yeah that's not really ideal...

In future resize first like one_wheel says.

If you don't want to pull them all and resize the necks again that's probably the best option for a situation which isn't ideal.

I expect you will see a noticeable difference between the loose and tight loads.

This might just be a POI change which isn't a bit deal, or your groups may deteriorate.

In future, resizing first would be the better option for second-time reloads.

Thanks guys.

I didn't resize this time as they were all already primed and couldn't be bothered redoing it for a few rounds.

I'll shoot these loads and see how they go as they're already all done, but will resize first in future.

Hey mate,

I've done the same thing - reseated pulled bullets without neck sizing - and I did get a little bit of an increase in group accuracy.

Like you said, for the sake of a few rounds I couldn't be bothered de-priming, re-sizing, re-priming... blah blah.

Resizing in future is the way to go :)
