.223 reloading Noob

Post by fredhamish » 24 Aug 2017, 9:11 pm

HI all,
just picked up a CMC mounteneer in .223 with a new 23" stainless barrel.
looking to get some reloading going for it but need to start somewhere so I thought I would ask some people that have already done it.

Already reloading for 30-30, 308W, 44mag,44-40 303 and 762x54r so i have 2205, 2207 and 2208 on hand.

I will be shooting paper at mainly 200m with some plinking out to 600m Any help that I could get would be greatly appreciated

Do you know the twist rate of the barrel?

Hi bladeracer, Don't know the twist rate yet but will do some measuring out at the range tomorrow.
The scope is a 3-9x42 bushnell

How did you work out the twist rate of a replacement barrel from the internet?

measured the barrel out at the range today and the CMC is a 9-twist and was extremely accurate with some Buffalo River .223 with the Sierra 55gn game king. No marked velocity on the packet and i can't find out much on the inter-web thingie so any suggestions would be much appreciated.
and the barel is 24", measured it wrong.

Given it's a "near new barrel" on a Mountaineer it's pretty safe to assume it's been rebarrelled and the twist question.

Mate if it's accurate with factory stuff just go kill stuff with it and done get wrapped up in the other stuff. But if you want to play try some Nosler Custom Comps in 69gr over 2208

thanks for that Chronos, I'm reloading for 6 other firearms and get a lot of satisfaction with dialling in loads. I have been reloading 30 and 44 cal for 20 something years but i have never tried any 22 cal. I must say that I am really enjoying shooting the 223.
most of the time i think I do the half day at the range so i can have a week of relaxing reloading :)

I've Chonographed my 223 firing OSA Blitzkings at 3250 fps and my reloads as mentioned above @ 3220 fps, working out to about a half inch difference at 200m. if that helps ya...

I was most impressed with the grouping for a 2nd hand 223 with a fairly average scope
