30-30 & 30-06 Soft loads

Post by ozfisher71 » 18 Dec 2013, 6:34 pm

G'day all,

I'm new to forums and just after some advice.

I am looking at loading some reduced loads with AR2206H for my Model94 30-30 and Vanguard 30-06. Projectiles of choice are:

Hornady Vmax 110 gr
Speer 130 gr HP
Hornady FTX 160 gr (30-30 only)

With pointed projectiles I only load the 30-30 one in the tube one in the chamber.

Also any advice on Barnes TSX for the 30-06.

Welcome mate.

What's the purpose of the rifle/load?

You're talking about a pretty by difference in power between a 110gr and 160gr pill when it hits...

I can speak highly of the Hornady V-Max.

I actually recently did a little write up here on it - viewtopic.php?f=12&t=834

87gr for my .243, not 30 cal, but still useful.

They are now the bullet for my .243.

Oh, I forgot to say... I'd give the 110gr a miss.

A mate of mine did exactly what you're doing... Worked up reduced loads for his .308 using 110 pills for his wife.

They were all crap. Couldn't get such a short pill to stabilise as best we could tell.

Went up to 125gr Nosler Ballistic Tips and he was in business though.

G'day,

I'm working on some loads with the TSX for my 30-06 Hawkeye All Weather at the moment.

I started with the 180gr but they didn't really take to rifle. They're unusually long is the problem I think.

The weight retention and damage was great, but not such much on the accuracy in this case.

I have a batch of hand loads with the 150gr TSX waiting to go. Should get out to test them in the next few days with a bit of luck.

If they're accurate, I reckon they'll become my usual load moving forward.

If I'm not mistaken, those are the ones with the 'monoflex' tip aren't they?

So you can load multiple cartridges in a tubular mag...
Winchester Model 70 Featherweight - .270 Winchester Short Magnum
Uberti 1873 Short Rifle - .45 Colt
Winchester Model 70 Coyote Varmint - .22-250 Remington

I usually rate Speers pretty highly.

The Speer 130 gr HP should meet your requirements here.

It's a reasonably light pill for generating less recoil, but still a decent enough weight for reasonable ballistics and energy on target.

If you're tossing up between those 3 bullets and reduced loads are a priority, this bullet would be my starting point.
See you on the firing line.
