Geco 223 ammo

Post by Milesy » 08 Oct 2017, 4:05 pm

Hi All
At the range yesterday when RO pointed out excessive smoke emitted from breach after I fired.
Turns out the primer was being pieced by the pin.
All new to me but was only happening with the Geco 223 Rem recently picked up.
He suggested stop using asap.
Bugger have got 200 rounds.
Anyone seen this before?
Cheers Milesy

Don't use them. Way too hot for your rifle. Return them to where you bought them. That's assuming other ammo is OK.

If that is a drama for you dismantle them if you can and drop about 2 or 3 grains and try a group.

P. S. You can give them to me.

Correct Ruger American gents
Factory ammo and cheap so I guess buyer beware.
Shot a whole heap of good quality and expensive ammo through this gun without issue.
BTW I'm new to the Centre fire game but this is a really accurate gun for its price considering I'm the mug on the trigger.

It's made by RWS in Germany (from what I remember), so it should be pretty good ammo.

That said, it's obviously not working for you, so no matter how good it is, it's useless to you.

I would get a friend to fire a few through his rifle and if there aren't any problems, get a REAL gunsmith to check out your rifle. If he can't find anything strange with it, either take them back or swap them to your friend.

If they don't work in the friend's rifle either, take them back post haste.

Thanks Franc
I have looked really hard into reloading but I just can't get the numbers to stack up.
Although I have genuine reason Varmint Etc. most of my time has been at the range shooting paper getting used to my 223.
Which I must say for a cheap gun is a ripper. Cheap loads around .60c to .70c have been hitting pretty good.
Keen to hear if you can reload cheaper considering I haven't been able to find a reload system without supplies for less than $600/$800 just for the tools.

$600 to start reloading. Humbug.

Often see it for about $250

Just add Lee dies $45 + components.

sungazer wrote:It could be a firing pin issue. It could be overly soft primers. The round could be too hot. Given that it is factory ammo. I would be looking very closely at the rifle first.

I would tend to agree how many did you fire that penetrated the primer ?
When did you last clean the chamber ?
other ammo IS ok at the moment , if not I would strip the bolt .
If you do not know how to strip the bolt take it to a gunsmith looks like the retaining pin may have broke and letting the pin to far forward https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6evHnnnVw4

All of my dies are Lee and I only lube to full length size in the RGB dies. The collet neck dies don't need lube.

Over here in the USA, AR users buy Geco 223 by the 1000 lot case and all reports I have heard is top quality, accurate ammo. Geco is one of my favorite brands in other calibers and never had an issue. Not to say it couldn't happen but I have found Geco to be one of the better ammo manufacturers.
