Mitch@Ripley wrote:Hey guys, I'm looking at something different to my last few posts here (RE: Super accurate .223 ammo). I am looking at developing a super CHEAP load that I can blast away into dirt and not wince every time I pull the trigger (The 60c per shot might not sound like much but when you are still in school, your dad is having to put most of his money into his car and (rental) house, it sure adds up quickly). Anyway, so far my cheapest load (yet to be tested) consists of: 22.5gr of ADI BM8208 (about 16,5 C) a lapua 55gr fmj (30-35 c depending on batch...it is actually the cheapest, non bulk projie the lgs has) and a 6 cent WSR primer in once-fired brass, this comes to about 56cents a round. I have been searching for a cheap 55 or 62gr FMJ (preferably Boat tailed with cannelure) however the cheapest projie I have found so far is a 55gr Z Max (about 24c each).
Any advice or guidance is muchly appreciated. I would prefer FMJ, but realistically, any projie in the "cheap" range will probably perform the same.
Also, I'm about 2/3 of the way through my powder, so if you have any suggestions on an ADI powder that is either super cheap or that can be used for both budget and precision rounds, I'd be happy to consider it for my next purchase.
oh and I'd love for the load to be sub-MOA, but as long as it hits an A4 sheet of paper at 200-300 yards, I'm happy.
sorry for dragging on, thanks in advance for the help.

sungazer wrote:That is such a good price for Sierra bullets. They must be a second off some line. I wish there was a cheap quality alternative to 308.

I'm sure you can, but what was the initial investment to be able to do so?
I'd love to try some of them regardless though.

Lets just say I will never turn a profit.

on_one_wheel wrote:Lets see some pricing.
Here's my .223 costs.
1000 Winchester small primers. $65 / 1000
ADI 2208 Powder $50 / 500 grams
Hornady Z max 55 grain $155 / 500
So for my 25.5 grain loads the cost is
(assuming the brass is free)
Powder 41c
Projectile 31c
Primer 6.5c
Total 78.5 cents per round
If my calculations are correct
sungazer wrote:Plus the cost of the brass which isn't free and the barrel wear if you shoot a lot.

powder works out to 18c actually

Ok ... I just crunched the numbers again
7716 grains per 500 grams for 5000 cents
5000 ÷ 7716 = 0.648 cents per grain, times 25.5 grains = 16.52 cents worth of powder per round
Thanks Tripod, You've just saved me a massive 24.5 cents per round !!!

Can you point me to where I can find a 4kg bottle at an appreciably cheaper price per gram than a 500g? using the reloading calculator spreadsheet, and all the places I have found so far with pricing available, the difference between buying 500g and 4kg is about 2-3c per load...

Just ask your dealer to order it for you.
I pay $375 for 4kg of AR2206H.
I pay around $60 for 500gm bottles. If you're paying well under $50 then stick with the 500gm bottles, they're easier to store.
