Post by Mitch@Ripley » 15 Nov 2017, 8:07 pm

Hey, another idea for a cheap load, has anybody on here used the Hornady 55gr ROO MAX projectiles for .223? they are on special and considering getting some this weekend

also getting new powder at end of year, any suggestions for 55-69gr? really loving the lighter (55-60gr) projies lately.

Several members here have recommended sierra super roo. Just do a search.
I got a box some time back. Just waiting to get around to testing the trial ammo I have loaded.

yeah I've looked at super roo, but roo max is 12.5 cents each at the moment so I want to get them whilst they're cheap

I've tried the Roo Max in my Weatheby (Howa 1 in 12 twist) honestly they went great in the accuracy department. Maybe I just didn't find the sweet spot. Dunno. I also have a Howa 223 mini action which I'm yet to try the Roo max in. Might try this weekend.

I'd probably buy the Zmax at $105 for 500
Or
The Sierra Super Roos at $155 for 1000.

$75 for 600 Roo Max is cheap (usually have for $85 per 600) but they might not work in your Rifle. I have heard they can work ok. But generally when people refer to Roo Load they are referring to Sierra super Roos. For Hunting I probably prefer the Zmax (ballistic tip) but for $75 for 600 you probably should at least try them. Your not going to get any other ptojectile for 12.5 cents each.

Hey Mitch@Ripley, I'm relatively new to reloading but having very good success with Sierra Super Roo 55gn projectiles. $155/1000

Found my sweet load and OAL with ADI 2206H powder with the Super Roos - 5 shot group of 0.425" last week at 100m.
Howa1500 .223 Varmint 1in9 20" heavy barrel, bipod and rear sandbag

Hornady AMAX 55gn projectiles gave beaut groups across all 2206H loads, more expensive at something like $66/250
Have seen mixed results with Hornady Super Roos (but I love 168gn ZMAX in the Howa .308 getting 1/3MOA)

Just my 2cents worth. Hope it helps.

I see that they are that price for online sales only, Do they let you pickup online sales in person now or will they only post them out like they used to. I was going to be up there and tried to avoid the postage on some stuff by picking it up and they wouldn't do that and I couldn't buy it over the counter at the online price.

I quickly tried the Hornady Roo max in my Howa mini action tonight. I just used the load that works with the Sierra super Roos (25.5gr ar2206H) for a bit over an inch at 100 metres. So they can work ok. But I think I'd rather spend a couple of cents extra and used the Sierra Super Roos.

Tripod,

I went into tore and they tried to charge me 85, I then quoted the price, they let me quickly make an online purchase then I walked out the door with them, they are ok to deal with sometimes

Oh and I pretty much paid for a Lithgow 101 with $5 notes hahaha the look on their faces was funny as heck
