357/38 Projectiles in 9mm

Post by Bigkev 2.0 » 18 Jan 2018, 12:04 pm

Hi All,

Just checking if anyone here has experience in using 0.357" (357/38SP) progies in 9x19 loads?

If so, what combinations have you used? Any good?

Cheers

Doesn't make any sense to me. 9mm is actually not a straight walled case, so stuffing a 158g bullet that is already oversized into such a case is not going to be right nor leave enough room for powder. If you use lighter and smaller .357 bullets you might run into over pressure issues

Not a wise move trying to load .357 into 9mm case as 9mm requires a .355/.356 projectile. There's a risk of splitting the case and over pressure of the firearm which is never a good thing.

What kind of projectiles and loads are we talking about?
Personally, I have limited experience with copper jackets and power loads, I deal almost exclusively with target loads and cast lead projectiles.
I have used .358 projectiles in a Beretta 92fs with no problems, feeding or otherwise.
Actually I did have to use a .38 seating die as the. 358s tended to get stuck in the 9mm die.
As for accuracy, lets just say that the 92fs, while being known for reliability is not a 50 yard target pistol.
Having said that, the. 358s were no worse than anything else I tried, and were among the better ones.

I agree with coroboreeboy, I pretty much use 357 projectiles in both 9mm and 38SPL. However, 100 - 125Gn.

The heavier projectiles (eg. 148, 158 etc) only in 38SPL/357MAG.

As others have mentioned it depends on what type bullet we are talking about. Most all jacketed and plated bullets designed for 9mm run .355 to .356 most commercial cast bullets run .356" but my CANIK TP9SA likes cast bullets sized to .357" coated or using traditional lube. 9mm groove diameters can be all over the place so if your shooting cast lead it's a good idea to slug your bore before buying a mold or purchasing bullets, many bullet casters I know that cast for 9mm buy the lighter weight molds designed for 38/357 Mag. or oversized for 9mm an size accordingly to there pistols bore such as my NOE .358 124 gr. TC 4 cavity.

As to jacketed or plated bullets which I have some but hardly ever shoot I just stick with .355 to .356 dia. bullet in 115 to 147 gr. as they will give no issues as long as you do your part reloading an following bullet mfg. published load data. There are a couple mfg. that offer 158 gr. sub-sonic FMJ 9mm loads such as Fiocchi, Prvi Partizan and IMI. I'm pretty sure they use .355 or .356" dia. bullets so as not to cause overpressure issues in a variety of firearms.

Here are some 165 gr. plated bullets for the 9mm, again the dia. .356" is the important factor.

It can be done in lots of barrels, but you will need more powder to push the tighter bullet down the barrel and the muzzle will rise more than it will with the correct sized projectile. No gain and several negatives.
