Accurate powder measure

Post by RedRod » 12 Apr 2018, 12:43 pm

Hi all,

I am wanting to reload a batch of Martini-Cadet .310 using 9.5 grains of Alliant 2400 powder. However, my digital scales don't seem to be able to measure such small loads with accuracy and so I'd like advice on either -

a) A powder measure capable of accurately measuring such small loads OR
b) A powder dipper fixed to contain 9.5 grains powder.

Any advice would be helpful.

I find it strange the scales are not accurate when weighing those quantities. Traditional beam balance or electronic?

However a few here have recommended the Lee powder thrower.
Me I would probably just make a dipper out of an old cartridge. Unless I was loading heaps of them.

I've never even seen Alliant 2400 so I can't comment on its accuracy through the Lee Perfect Powder Measure, or what its dipper capacities are. With ADI stick powders the Lee Measure is pretty good.

According to Lee, the 0.70cc dipper is 9.4gn of 2400.

hey OB, how would you go about making a dipper out of a cartridge ? braze, silver solder a brazing rod to the side of say, a 30-30 case/ pistol case and trim it down till it holds the required amount ?

Any tips on soldering, OB?

I am trying to do exactly what you've described (for Trail Boss actually), I tried, flux and solder a steel rod to brass case, no go, solder won't take, just pops off. Any suggestions?

Yeah, steel is tricky to solder. Brass or copper is heaps easier. Have you got any "bakers soldering flux"? Melt the solder or some lead in a pot, then after dip clean steel in the flux put it in the lead, dry or damp only. Will be easy to solder then.

Silver solder is great if you have the gear but way over the top for that job. I plan on making a set of about 20 . I just need a donation of 20 or so empties.

PS. Try coat hanger wire, some of it is tinned

Actually, I do have a tin of bakers flux. That's what I used. Also one that's inside solder. Haven't had luck with either. I'll try the coat hanger wire...

The one in the solder wire is really only good for electrical work.

The bakers flux I'm talking about comes in a plastic bottles. It's acid liquid.

Not the brown stuff, it's only for electrical work.

Here is what I've made. A couple are adjustable. Must 6 or. 7 all up. The Lee dipper is just for comparison.

Or just wrap the wire around the case at the extractor groove - easy as ...
