Noob projectile questions

Post by AusTac » 12 Apr 2018, 12:44 pm

Hey fellas,

Require some advice from the more learned than myself.
So .500 s&w mag, designed for a pistol and the cartdrige is built as such that it'll fit into a revolver cylinder with the maximum size being 700 grains, take away that constraint and whats the deal? Being of .50 calibre can i buy a standard projectile say of .50bmg and cram that in a 500 case? ( not actually sure if possible or not ) What are the considerations? Pressure? Power compacting? Lands/ grooves?

And then say i wanted to cast a 1000 grain projectile? Custom mould etc etc

Don't laugh to hard - limited reloading experience here

the 50 BMG is .510 and the 500 S&W is .500 so i would say no on this but i know you can load hard cast 700gr flat nose projectiles was watching a video this morning of a bloke shooting one.
with the 1000grain projectile you may find you will run out of room in the case for powder and the OAL may be way to long to actually chamber maybe some of the others will chime in with there thoughts on this

In a break open single shot, you can seat a lot further out and probably run it hot as well, but work up to that. Seating further out could jam the projectile in the lands and either spill powder everywhere or require to be tapped out (probably not safe) from the muzzle end, if you want to unload the rifle (from the breach end). As long as diameter is a match, you're good. With copper jacketed projectiles, you will want to use the correct diameter bullet. For example not all 30 caliber are the same. 308, 3105, 311, 312. So definitely match the diameter to the bottom with jacketed pills.

With cast, you will need to go a fraction over. May need to research how much over, but it will be in thousands of an inch range.

Haven't got it yet but just trying to make sure i have something to shoot when i do get it i've got some factory 350 grain stuff but that's way off the full 700 grain max load shoulder breaking experience, all the reloading stuff is soooo expensive so i keep putting it off

Join reloading FB group. There's a lot of surplus equipment that people sell off pretty cheap. And if you want a demo, offer's there.

Mainly when you load the less common chamberings. The more popular the cheaper.
