Picatinny rail worth having for the future?

Hi all,

I'm looking for a .270 win or .308 win at the moment and tossing up between the usual options.

Tikka, Savage, Ruger, etc.

I don't want a Ruger Gunsite Scout, but the one thing that did stand out against the others obviously is that it has the factory picatinny tail installed.

I could just be wasting my time with it as I don't have anything right now that would need the rail. At this stage I will be using a standard scope and additional optics or anything else on it.

Maybe it's just the "cool" factor lol.

Anyone find a picatinny rail more useful once they got it? Or reckon just give it a miss as I don't need it on a rifle right now?

If you haven't got anything to use on the rail then that's your answer?

No benefit in having rails over standard scope rings/mount if you're not using the picatinny rail for other things.

I gotta say the idea of some 45° offset iron sights off a picatinny rail appeals to me.

As you say though, only "cool" factor. Don't know that I'd ever actually use them lol.

You could always have a gunsmith add a rail to your rifle later if you want one down the road.

Would be stupid to buy a scout just for the rail and never use it...

Yeah. Plenty of better choices out there IMO.

A mate of mine used to work for a defence supplier. He bought a Scout for the rail when he was testing different lasers and night vision attachment's etc. which was fine.

Change jobs though and no longer had all those toys. Never used it again.
