So i see you would rather pay twice as much for a leupold which is what I'm leaning towards as well....
Any thoughts you have on how the 4-12 freedom rates against my 20 year old vx1 4-12 leupold..?
I can see a 4-12 freedom Leopold for 520 online as well.. ( that's cheap)
Do you know which reticle has the finest line in the centre of the crosshair..?
Most of my shooting will be at targets at the range..

Ques: Just to be clear,,,, is the particular scope being discussed a chinese Leupold knock off ?
If yes, that would explain the price. In which case I certainly wouldn't waste time nor $$$ on one.
If not, that would indicate to me that a formerly well respected brand name with quality gear has dropped the ball,,,,,,, and yet again I wouldn't
waste time nor $$$ on one.

You get what you pay for,, (sometimes even less, quality wise)
$510 for a ? new scope ?
I personally wouldn't waste my time or $$$ on such a thing.

so how do we tell if its a chinese knock off or a genuine USA made scope..?
.and what are the concerns..?...components breaking or failing..?...Zero changing as magnification changes orthrough recoil ..?..Light quality issues..?
Surely the lifetime warranty gives an indication its not going to be total cheap junk and there is some recourse if there are issues..
Basically will it be adequate for hunting and some basic range plinking or how much is neccessary to spend to get something decent but not being under any illusions that I'm not training for the olympics and putting them on rifles which are worth under $500 anyway.........?...
Its a bit of a dilemma actually ....spend a couple of grand each and get some highly regarded scopes or buy low end from a reputable brand to replace my 50 year old Tascos and nikko stirling scopes....
anjd thanks oldbloke thats the shop i was looking at..I did wonder about why they are so much cheaper then the other online suppliers though..I might give them a ring and ask....

The unfortunate fact is some of the knockoffs are easily distinguishable,,,,, some are not.
A discerning buyer should make it a point of finding out these differences pre purchase to avoid being ripped off.
I have no idea of how to distinguish the differences when it comes to Leupold.
I only own one of these which is on my 375 H&H Magnum,,,,, and that was made well before there were such things as "knock offs"
The rest of my scopes are a higher end brand,,,,,, and I do know that there are now knock offs of these kicking around.
The way I sort the chaff with these is to email the manufacturer and verify the serial number.
Personally my concerns with the ultra low cost scopes would simply be,,, are they up to the task really ?
You do notice very quickly after looking through and using quality optics compared to basic.
And,,,, lets be honest,, to get that ultra low purchase price,,, corners are cut, general quality, materials and workmanship does suffer.
The really sad bit is,,,,,, the fifty year old Tasco's are leagues above the Tasco's of today. The T signifies Terrible.
And,,,, when you see package deals from dealers,, they invariably have a Tasco or a Bushnell sitting on top.
Because,,,,,,,,,,,,,, they are dirt cheap.
And I fear Leupold are now treading the same path.
But, don't get me wrong,,,,,,,,,,, your dilemma is simply making your own choice,,,,,, I'm not advocating you step right or left.
I'm just saying,, my personal opinion is that I wouldn't waste my money on cheap sh!t.
Companies are wizards at wording or implying such things as warranties.
Yep,,, Sounds great,,,, Jump in and purchase.
But at the end of the day when things turn to sh!t,,,,,,,,, that's when you find out all the hitherto unmentioned exclusions.
They've already got your hard earned $$$$,,,,, and you've got Jack sh!t.
With advertising,, it's not "what they say",,,,,,,,,, quite often it's what they DON"T say.
I find there's something shameful about being swayed by "armchair has been "expurts" into buying something because it's cheap.
I'm far from being rich enough $$$wise to buy top shelf and not even spend time thinking about it,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
But I do know that rather than rushing in to "cheap Rse bargains" it's far better to hang back,,,, save pennies,,,, and get something that not only goes the distance,, but also supplies the goodies well into the future,, and gives you complete satisfaction.
This type of purchase also gives you (money in the bank) resale value in the future.
