G'day Stix,
That link is an Aussie store, I put that up to show the models in the range you were after, I actually bought mine from
https://www.tacticalscope.co.uk/about-us-1-w.asp

Even with shipping from UK I got it more than $300 cheaper than anyone here could match.

(By range i dont mean magnification)

Just the Prostaff mate, It's a great little scope to use (mine normally sits on the 204) and it's been used to pop bunny heads out past 300m at very last light (you couldn't see the rabbit with the naked eye but was able to with the scope. :drinks:

I don't like paralax adjustment on a hunting scope, it's not necessary, you just need something that you can get a quick bead on and get a shot off ASAP - fiddling with paralax etc is just a PITA in hunting situations (Yes you can set it on 100m) but what's the point in having it - it's not needed in hunting situations, much better to keep the mag range in the low end 3-9 or even lower (depends on the general terrain one will be hunting in as to what is suited) but you don't need a scope that has say 18x max when you are taking 50m shots for example, you should be able to shoot a deer at 300m easily if you know your outfit and again higher mag isn't needed at all, infact it's more of a hindrance more than a help.

Keep it simple and don't waste a heap of $$$ on features you really don't need (paralax, wanky reticles etc.

The Hawkes do look like a nice scope alright - I’m not real fussed on the reticle options but there was one or two I could live with I guess. I don’t like fine xhairs as a rule on a hunting outfit.

My 10-50×60 has the TMX reticle. A bit busier than the simpler cross hairs I was used to, but now I'm up to speed on it I'm quite happy.
Hawke also released a balliatic calculator app for smartphone with presets for everything from .177 to 12g slugs and compatible with all their reticles.
You can use it for range finding, holdover intercepts etc.

Their illumination is also stepless, so it's not intrusive like some. When I first turned it on, I got the sh!ts, thinking that it didn't work. It was just that on the lowest setting you can only see the illumination when it's dark enough to need it.

If I ever get another rifle, it will definitely be wearing a Hawke.

Of course, I'd love to have the Nightforce B.E.A.S.T, but $5500 is just plain silliness.

I don’t mind the illuminated dot - bit not interested at all in a busy reticle, I like to get a quick shot off when needed and some of the reticle are to thin and busy for my particular tastes.

i know i'm not a fan of mildot recticles. i found the zeiss terra recticles good for quick focus, the outer recticle lines are heavier than leupold.

Yeah I like simple mate, can't stand all that clutter when I'm looking through a scope (I know they have a purpose) just nothing I've got a use for to be honest, I do like the some of the illuminated dot offerings out there but so far managed without them so will continue to do so at this stage. :drinks:

Have you ever shot a good amount with a busy reticle Bigfella...?

I only ask cos i have 3 christmas tree reticles (varmint style reticles) & in the heat of the moment they dont bother me at all... :unknown:

Im not pushing either way mate...just saying...

Having said that, when i see some of those reticles with hash marks on the main vertical & horizontal staff/lines, i get the feeling i would hate them, but ive never shot with them so :unknown:

I've been playing with my scope off the rifle. Just getting an idea of eye relief, adj diopter so that reticle is in focus etc. I really like it. I like being able to focus on stuff - it makes the difference of seeing a number plate and then being able to read it. Especially noticeable under 50 m. Mine has mil dot. The adjustments are also mil dot. I like it - it is simple. Although this picture is from leupold, it isn't accurate. I just looked through my scope again - the dots and lines are smaller, better. It is also a larger view all over - for example the posts are much longer. The circle in this picture is too small for the dimensions of the reticle - not an accurate depiction at all.

This is the TMX in my Hawke, it looked way too busy when I first got it, but once I started using the app with it for range finding and holdovers etc, I really like it now.

I think a lot of it comes down to personal taste, although I chose this one because I had delusions of competing in F-Class and the TMX is designed for shooting to 1000yd.

I like the tmx too. For me that stuff is there if you want to use it. For all the times that you don't use it, it doesn't matter :) I'm happy to have something - and the fact that the markings match up with the adjustments (mil/mil), that's just useful.

Probably too late now, but I have a Leupold 3Xi 4.5x14x50 on my 223 and I love it. I have Redfield and Japanese TASCO on my rimfire rifles and they are OK but the Leupold is a big step above for glass clarity and simple but crisp reticle. Cost is around the $1000 mark but a good scope is something you should be able to have for a long long time without needing to replace it. This scope is also VERY GOOD at night when spotlighting.
I bought a Bushnell and sold it within a year, the reticle was so thick it seemed to block the critical part of what I was trying to shoot.

NOIA TV did a comparison between 4 scopes to see how they performed in low light - because sometimes ur out there at the crack of dawn or late into the day. Leupold and Meopta came out best out of the 4. Swarovski and Zeiss didn't fair so well....

I've really only looked through a few Leupolds and a couple of Burris scopes but just about everyone I've asked about the Meopro range loves them. I'm looking at putting a 3.5-10X44 on my T1X when I get it. Having said that I still plan on looking through some scopes when I'm down at the store and seeing what tickles my fancy.

If you haven’t purchased yet - have a look at this app. It’s free.
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/sniper- ... 1026883819

Once you have a load selected - you can choose from hundreds of late model scopes, zoom appropriately to the range of that actual scope - and see exactly how a number of different targets and their size will appear through the selected scope / reticle.

hit youtube and type in NIOA TV - SEASON 5 / EPISODE 3

not the most scientific testing but the Swaro Z3 gets an absolute pasting by the Nioa eggspurts. I suspect they were being kind by placing the Leupold VX3i equal first place with the Meopta Meopro.

Good stuff. I have heard from a couple of blokes that they have nearly ran out of elevation at 100 years when sighting in, they have either put a 20moa rail on or shimmed the back ring.
Do you have yours on a rail? I have seen a few on the Howa Facebook page just on rings with no mention of running out of elevation.

Nioa don’t import Swarov’s or Zeiss to my knowledge, nor do they import Meopta’s but they’d have good reason to praise the loopy’s

Perhaps a scope comparison made by a Swarovski importer would have a different outcome?

There’s a food write up in a recent aust shooter between Leo 4-12/40 and Swarovski equal which was 44 from memory. I think from further memory the author was just a casual contributor comparing two scopes he owned.
The Leo was $860 and swark was $1500 from memory.
The author commented on how similar the glass was, and saidcthe swark had firmer / solid clickers - apart from that they were more or less very, very equal, so with the price difference in play, was hard to justify the extra cost.
