Vortex diamondback and Hissie fits.

Post by TassieTiger » 16 May 2019, 1:13 am

So, I’ve been shopping for a while for another Leupold scope 4-12 / 40 or 50 to drop on my 30-06 sauer. It’s shooting a lot better than the current scope, the ole 3-9 bushnell and she deserves an upgrade.

So I’ve missed out on a couple second hand units over the last couple of weeks and yesterday, ole mate on used guns sold one out from under me - despite me already sending him a deposit...yep, I know right.

So, in my outright frustration and fuzzie head - I bought a vortex diamond back 4-12/40 without doing a lot of research...it was pretty cheap but I knew 2 things. Vortex is generally regarded as the best value/cheapest after the cheap rubbish sector and they had a lifetime no questions asked warranty...

So to my queries - has anyone mounted a diamond back AO on to a large centrefire ? If so, how have you found the (now I look it up!!!!) very tight 2.5-3 inch eye relief?
How is the glass? Is the 4-12 enough magnification for 250m rabbit head sized target acquisition?

It is what it is now - I should have researched but I was thoroughly annoyed with Mr two timing better offer and wasn’t thinking straight. If it’s crap, then I’ll try and recover some of my $$$ and get back into que and saving for another second hand Leupold. I’m hoping this won’t be the case lol.

I think age and eyesight are a big factor.I have just had my eyes checked and have a very small loss from 10 years ago 48-58 with my new glasses on I have adjustment on the focus on my scopes with no glasses all my scopes are maxed out including my Leupold.I remember at 38 having very clear veiw at all distances and I doubt there is any solution.

The vortex just turned up - 1 day from Brisbane to Hobart...what is going the hell on? Lol...

I’m pleasantly surprised at first glance...eye relief is going to be close to getting whacked but the thing is light, light, light.
I’m hearing you about eye sight...I went to spec savers, they gave me prescription long distance glasses, but that ensured I couldn’t read their digging bill lol.
I gave those glasses to my missus and she joked to me - these are glass...they have no script nos on them. I took them back and they said they were 1% off glass or some crap...nice. Wankers.

Nothing wrong with a Vortex, got a 4-12 on the 243W. and scope comes with a life time warranty.

I like much more magnificatiin for shots that far.

For me, more mag not only makes the shot easier (much bigger target), but also shows up much finer movement much better.

On low mag, some reticles can cover up so much of the bunnies head & small movements, these movements can often give away if the bunny is about to move, or settle there & chow down.

That sucks eith the twst thst took your deposit & sold to someone else...there are pig headed kunts everywhere these days.
I hope you got the coin back... :unknown:

Yeah, the prick is not returning my calls or emails - $50 deposit not the end of the world but not really the point...I have an address though
I tested the magnification a little last night - it'm not sure what some manufactures use to test their specs or maybe its better glass but its confusing nonetheless. I compared this cope alongside a VX3, a VX2, Bushy banner 3-9 and a AR optics 4.5-18.
It seems to my eye, as if the 4-12 vortex is at least equal in magnification to the 4.5-18 - when the 4.5-18 is on setting about 16. Vortex is better than I thought it would be.
I walked out a matchbox to 200metres in low light. The 2x leupolds would be an easy shot with very thin reticles and more than ample magnification - which part of the box would sir like me to hit lol, the vortex would also be realistically an easy shot with a very thin reticle but I hate the BDC aspect of it.., the AR optics scope was struggling in the light (but the wind blew the box over, so the AR comparison was 12 minutes later in the evening) and had a fair bit less light to deal with, still enough magnification on 18 and testicle is ok, but Id not comfortably take the shot with the AR scope - the 3-9's had zero hope. Even my chinese wonder scope would not have been able to secure the matchbox in the reticle - it completely blocked out the box.

Have to get this vortex mounted and tested. Will see how we go.

You could go through the small claims court and add the filing cost on to the claim...

You should be able to do that easily with that sort of magnification, I've shot em over 300m in the head with a 3-9x50 Nikon Prostaff so you should do it easily I'd say.

I have a 56 mm vortex. Big heavy and upsets the balance and ergonomics of my lever gun but I can see “everything “with it

My first rifle I brought was a CZ 452 American .22, got a vortex diamondback 3-9x40 for it and wow, eye relief was terrible, scope was mounted as far back in the rings as possible and I near had to put my eye on the glass to see thru it, everyone on seeing me shoot it asking why I was leaning so far forward, until they had a look at it. Luckily I got rid of it for only about $10 less than I paid for it and got a Sightron S1 3-9x40, heaps better scope and was only $199 from memory. I still chuckle when I see a rifle with a diamondback on it as it’s always mounted heaps back in the rings....

So I took the vortex / 30-06 to get on paper today and see what could be done with the extra mag power over typical 9 x.

Target was 100m AND believe it or not - shot only Remington factory 180gn rounds.
Smaller holes were my .22 cz455.

Eye relief as expected wasn’t great.
Clarity was excellent, clickers tracked true, magnification was enough on 12x to do the below at 100m.

Now on to further reload development.
