Budget scope recommendation - $200

Post by Altay » 27 May 2019, 8:10 pm

So the old man is looking at getting back into the hunting caper and is set on a Howa mini action 223 and is after a scope but doesn't want to spend more than around $200. I reckon he should stump up a bit extra but he doesn't see the value in it. Currently considering a Hawke Vantage or Nikko Stirling Panamax in 3-9x40.

Thoughts or recommendations? Cheers

For that budget have a look at the Bushnell AR223. You could get one mailed to your door for under $200 from the big store in Qld.

There’s one on gumtree at moment - new, $100 cheaper. I’ve also got a 223 variant as well...for the dollars...pretty decent.

I was reading a post on FB from a disgruntled customer of said store and a dozen other people with similar experiences so might give them a miss. Will look at the AR223 though.

I’ve got a Hawke 3-9x40 on my .22 magnum. I reckon that was around $200.
Surprised with the quality, myself.

I’ve had a Hawke scope, their okay for the money. Just remember you only get what you pay for. Save a bit more money up , and have a look at the budget leupold “freedom” scopes or the redfield brand of scope good optics for the money. About double of your intended budget, but go to a store that stocks both and try them out and compare. If you’re serious about getting into shooting, spend the money on descent optics. Cheers

I don’t want to take this off topic but is parallax adjustment generally only found on high end scopes?

Not necessarily. You can get it on a few of the low-mid range scopes too.

Not at all, although the $30 Ebay 3-9x40 I got recently barely has focus adjustment, and no parallax adjustment I can find.

If you buy a scope for $159 and upgrade later you would be able to sell it for $100 and the experience has only cost you $59. The Bushnell AR 18x is good enough to hit stuff out at 500.

I have never set foot in said large QLD shop but have bought thousands of dollars worth of stuff from there and yet to have a problem. Large range, good prices and good service from where I sit.

Dots? Why are you using the dots if you want to shoot at a small target?

I've never even set foot in Qld, but I've also had thousands of dollars of good experience with them.
