What is the absolutely best hunting rifle scope???

Post by Nerlaqub » 23 Jul 2020, 10:49 pm

I am looking for opinions on the absolute best hunting scope that I can buy. I am going all out on this one...one and done. Leaning towards the Zeiss Victory Diavari FL or HT.

I know the following are considered to be the best: Zeiss, Swarovski, Schmidt and Bender, Nightforce, Burris, etc.

Looking for best in low light, best image, and I will want a custom laser-etched turret dial like the Leupold CDS dial.

Opinions and thoughts please...

There are some fantastic hand built premium scopes like March and Tangent Theta but would you see any improvement in your results over a S&B PM2 or a Nightforce ATACR? Are you looking to spend $5,000 plus on your scope?

For the money, meopta meostar range . Or leupold vx5 series.

You probably wouldn’t pick the difference between these and a more expensive scope. Seriously

What type of hunting do you do. The absolute best ever hunting scope I have used is a steel tubed 4 x wide angle jap Bushnell on my lever 308. It is perfect for the hunting I do.
For others, maybe not so much.

Zeiss Victory HT get my vote for low light performance for sure. But any of the Zeiss scopes that use the HT lenses are very good in low light.

Short version: there is no best. You can only have what is best for you and any given situation.

Mate what gun is it going on? Do you want thermal optics or standard? Are you anticipating hunting with it or competition as well? What type of country (scrub, highland bush, rolling hills, flat)?

And not to offend you, but are you a new shooter? Do you know what you want or is this the sole question you're asking... what's the best?

Without knowing any of that I'd highly recommend the Leupold Rifleman 4-12x40. Its about $500, works nicely and has re-zeroing disc type dials. Optical clarity is good and it comes with a lifetime warranty. I've got a few Leupolds now and have been using them as a brand on various rifles for about 15 years now. My Leupold VX 2-7x40 is a charmer, it currently sits on my Ruger American Ranch in 450 Bushmaster. Its an accurate rifle, 1.5" at 150m easily. The scope does not limit it in the field, and more than stands up to a poorly lit afternoon or nearing-dusk situation. Best overall? No. Best for me? Yes.

I recommend the 4-12x40 Leopold as its affordable for a quality optic, functions well, comes with a lifetime warranty, will suit a large variety of situations, and has worked well for me.
Long time shooter, beginner reloader.

I have put a Meostar and a Diavari side by side in low light, and I can't pick the difference. Whatever it is the difference it is very minor. Apart from the price.

Looks like I am going to be the pessimist on this topic.
That is, a scope has several functions, among them being the obvious optical performance. IMO, what some neglect to consider is the sight adjustment function. Over time, this mechanism breaks down and the grouping of the rifle is badly affected. It is an unseen malady that the shooter is unaware of.
But is this what the OP means by quality? Or is it an acceptable inconvenience? Scopes can be returned for repair, of course, often without charge.

Yep
And if the range is too far on a game animal, pass on it.
And FWIW, I held very good elevation with a 1/2 dioptre lens in front of my fore sight and a corrective lens between my eye and the peep, when I shot Target Rifle.

If you can see the ironsights that is. Once both near and far vision start to go, and you have astigmatisms it becomes a case of shooting at rock throwing ranges or admitting you would like to enjoy the sport like you used with a scope.
