I've often wondered why when you look through a scope normally, the reticule is black,,, and yet when looking from extra long eye relief they show up
as gold or bronze in color.

As bladeracer said many modern reticles are etched directly onto glass, whereas traditional reticles are wire. They are normally black, and any difference you see from holding away is down to chromatic aberration. Pulling scopes apart is easy, getting them back together properly and creating the vacuum seal, then nitrogen purging, THAT is the hard part! Cheers.
