Anyone ever dismantled a scope ?

Post by Die Judicii » 09 Aug 2020, 10:29 pm

Just wondering if anyone has done this,, and can tell me what the reticule itself is made of.
Furthermore, what color are they ?

I've often wondered why when you look through a scope normally, the reticule is black,,, and yet when looking from extra long eye relief they show up
as gold or bronze in color.

Modern reticles are most likely etched onto the glass.

G'day Die Judicii,
As bladeracer said many modern reticles are etched directly onto glass, whereas traditional reticles are wire. They are normally black, and any difference you see from holding away is down to chromatic aberration. Pulling scopes apart is easy, getting them back together properly and creating the vacuum seal, then nitrogen purging, THAT is the hard part! Cheers.

Dismantle? Only once, after I broke it (don't ask). Well....it was buggered anyway.

I pulled an old cheapy apart. It's reticle was made from tiny little brass strips mounted in a ring.

Is there a place in au that can restore scopes????? I have an old pecar Berlin 4-10 I'd like to see in its original glory. I'm happy to spend a bit of money if it's something that can be done respectfully. Does anyone have any experience.

Try Premium Optics here in oz. The guy there apparently handles repairs etc for Pecar scopes.

Back when I was a teenager and could buy guns heaps easier than a packet of smokes, I pulled apart a cheapy then took it back to the supplier .... the first thing I was told is that due to me removing the eyepiece. The warranty was void. So that’s pretty much when I stoped being scope doctor

Glass etching it common on modern scops.

Wires or even hairs on older scopes are common.

Modern cheap stuff can have a foil disc with the crosshairs in a cross through the centre, simply glued into place. I've doctored a cheap Nikko and found this recently, the thin disc had folded under severe recoil (ie deliberate misuse on a 450 Bushmaster haha) and I simply glued it back into place.

The foil disc was reflective silver pointing toward the front of the scope.

 thanks for the info, I did find both options with Google but it's good to get positive recommendations. Looks like premium optics must use optical repairs for his work, there was a link when I was parousing his site.

Thanks for the reply No 1 and others.
I have no plan on dismantling any scopes,,,,,,, was just curios about their internals.

I dismantled a scope 30 odd years ago. An old 3-9 variable that shocked me how bad it was inside.

My old 2-7 Burris thats about 42 years old was repaired. Still use it today on a Ruger Scout in .308

Hi im in melbourne (first time on the site)
I have a bushnell forge scope that has broken and want to know if I can fix it or if there is a shop I can take it to in Victoria?
The paralax is stuffed - feels like there is a bubble in there when you turn it stops half way and then jumps/pops over as you turn it

Any help is greatly appreciate, thanks
