Marlin 336 scope

Hi guys
I just bought a marlin 336 in 30-30 it came with the mount just wondering if I should scope it and what would you recommend?
I need it for low light/moonlight and also maybe for scrub

I have a vortex red dot holographic on my day lever gun but not yet field tested it No idea on its suitability at night

FP- I think you need to decide on most likely ranges for shots, because as your aware, there’s huge differences between 150-200 to 300-500 in what scope parameters you need.
I’m awaiting a 45/70 and am kicking this around myself....

G'day pete, I plan on buying a marlin 3030 also and I'd be putting this scope on it. I think small scopes suit 3030 lever guns great. I keep my scoped 308 or my 44mag(open sights) with me in the tractor, I think this scope on a 3030 would be better than both of them

Good choice. I used a 4x40 on mine.
I had a 1-4x20 at one stage, nice wide view but not too good in the evening. You need a 40mm objective lens or more for low light situations. 50mm is better but price jumps.

Oh, and I wouldn't go for fine + hairs.

I was steering away from red dots because my 22 has one and its too bright to see anything at night, I don't know if there'd be a difference with holographic

Definitely short range 200 tops. I bought it specifically because the shotgun was too short but the 243 would have been dangerous for houses in the area

I have one of those on my 243 they're pretty good and I didn't even think of that as a possibility. (Haven't used it in a while) Probably a good choice.

Thanks for your words of wisdom I'll probably get the 243 out on dark tonight and see if the pig plex is a winner. If not I'll look into the 40mm

Farmer Pete. On my next hunt I’ll drag the holo sight out during dusk and low light and I’ll report back to u about what I find ....your prob correct , that little red light on its lowest setting probably messes with our ability to see pigs in the dark conditions

To give u an idea.
I now have 4, 3-9×40s on various rifles.
I can see with the scopes at say 4 power about the same as I can with my own eyes.

If you want to see better than you can see naturally I think you will need to go to a 50mm objective or start looking at various types of NV. (Obviously a spotlight or torch is an option)

I have an 1895 with a red dot which is great especially on moving targets.
I also have a 336 with a 2-7.
I find the 2-7 great for anything with a little distance but even 2x is too much at 10 yards.
May I suggest you consider your need for magnification?
If you want magnification I would suggest go from 1-4. On 1x you can still use both eyes open.
Now when looking at light gathering ability a 4 power cannot use more light than can be gathered by a 32mm ocular. As most 1-4 scopes have a 20mm ocular then it will not be good in low light on 4 power but probably OK at 2 or 3 power.

I will agree with some of what is written, but not all.

I have a 1-6 on my lever action, but being a .243 has longer range than the old 30/30. I reckon a 1-4 would be ideal.

As for an illuminated reticle, two thumbs up from me. And in low light my scope is simply brilliant. The reticle is adjustable for power so can be set for any condition. So like any scope you get what you pay for, and having a red dot and small objective is no problem for my Swarovski, but a $500 scope in the same size may have some limitations.
