.17hmr scope

Post by Lsfan » 17 Sep 2021, 8:30 pm

I picked up a Simmons 6-24 scope for quite a bargain and like new condition. They are relatively cheap new, but still....
Anyway, since receiving it, I notice it is quite large and my intention was to use it on a 17hmr (which I don't yet have). Thinking of getting a marlin varmint 17hmr.
May be a stupid question, but is there such an issue as having a scope that is too big for a rifle? I'm thinking if ranges up to 200m at a range.
Any comments/ advice?

For varminting from a large scope will work alright for those dialed in shots i have a 4-12 on my marlin 917v perfect set up for out to 200m. Youll need a little more magnification for the 17 will be hard to see those little holes past 150 at the range.

There certainly is it makes them top heavy and a pain in the ass to use that's why my Rimfire rifles I've always been a Leupold fan but now that they don't make my favourite scope for that type of rifle God knows what I'm going to buy now .

Scope is the 4.5-14x40AO with the VH rec

Certainly possible to have a large, heavy, bulky scope on a hunting rifle, just down to personal preference. Not really a problem on a vehicle rifle though.

I have two 10-40x56's that are massive (475mm long, 34mm tube, 1200gm) so they don't stay on any rifle, I just put them on occasionally if I'm trying to shoot smaller groups. If I ever build a dedicated varmint rig though it could wear something this size.

That's a good point didn't think about the fact the hole will be small. Thanks for your feedback.

Yes ok that makes sense. Will it be as much a pain at the range on a rest?

Wow that is big. I think the Simmons one is 380mm or something. I guess I'll see what happens and maybe I can put it aside for future use.

It would be a lot easier on something heavy like a Lithgow 101 or one of the Heavy Barrel wider for end 17 not like the c z they got a very narrow front end. have not seen a Savage for quite a while but at the range it would still be great fun not much of a problem at all

Depends what you want it for. If its for hunting then a 3-15 or 3-12 or 3-9 is plenty.

Put a Meopta Meopro 4-12 x 50 Z-Plex on my Sako 17HMR. Great little set up for my style of hunting.

They seem to rate well amongst others. My problem is trying to justify to the wife why I need another. Spending less is less arguing.
