What size is this dovetail

Post by Kelsey Cooter » 04 Jan 2022, 1:52 pm

So I bought a 303-25 with a 1917 SHTLE action. Came with this ring mount/rings and a turretless scope.

I'm looking to replace the rings with much lower rings for a modern scope so I can get it shooting good while I find an old pecar scope to mount on it.

What size is this dovetail? My local had 17mm dovetail rings, these were too big.

The rings are definitely Hillver. They are a style with windage adjustment. They weren't on the market for long and I think they were intended for rimfires.
The base is a Hillver 'quick change' style with a 14mm dovetail.
It looks to me like it was for a No.4 so to fit it somebody would have had to modify the bridge.
You can confirm by the number stamped underneath.
7814 = I, II or III and 7954 = No.4
PM me I might be able to assist further.

Are the dovetails always sized from the smallest width? I guess the 14mm sizing is very approximate given its 14.8. Questions I've wondered and had trouble finding answers for some reason

Thanks mate, took a couple of pics of the base. Nothing stamped on the underside, AS 3 stamped on the top side

With the benefit of the additional pictures I can see I got the maker of the base wrong.
I have no idea of the maker of the base but as a guess the letters A and S suggests an Ausinel Scope mount but it could easily be some other long forgotten maker.
Be aware that the screws and threads are very likely BA.
The ugly screw heads can easily be repaired by gently hammering the burrs flat with a small jeweller's hammer.

Thanks for the info straightshooter!
What would be my best bet for finding steel mounts to put on it? Is that size common enough that I'll find it in a larger store?
