Help needed - dovetail mount

Post by duddley75 » 02 May 2022, 6:01 pm

Hi all,

So I bought myself a Chiappa LA322 take down barrel.

I also bought a red dot sight for it. As it has a dovetail rail, I purchased a dovetail to picatinny rail mount adapter.

For the life of me I cannot get the adapter to secure on the rail whereby I can attach the red dot with the pic mount.

I can squeeze the adapter on to the dovetail, but being spring loaded it doesn't stay.
If I leave the adapter on the rail and then try to fit the red dot, it doesn't clamp on.
I have done what other videos have shown and put the adapter loosely in the red dot mount and try and attached to the dovetail but it wont grab on.

I am concerned the adapter is the wrong size.
It is described as : Patrol 11 mm Dovetail to 20 mm Weaver Picatinny Rail Converter Adapter Base

As you can see in the photos, repeated attempts to get the base to stay has resulted in having scratched the paint work off the dovetail trying to get this to work.

I am not sure if the rounded dovetail is causing issues vs flat ones i have seen.

Any thoughts?

Disclaimer i might be wrong.
3/8 dovetail is measured at the narrowest point
11mm dovetail is measured at the widest point.
I think you have the wrong adaptor.

I have a bunch of those adaptors, they don't fit a rounded receiver, the receiver needs to be flat above the dove tail.
You can try filing the middle out with a round file perhaps, not sure there's enough meat in them though.

Thanks all. I haven't been able to find a small adapter in the 3/8 size that isnt a rail. I might need to jest get a longer rail.

I did think about filing the dovetail down but concerned it would be messed up and then no going back.

cheers

Don't touch the rifle's dovetail, but you can try filing a curve into the bottom of the mounts.
Otherwise just get a rail adapter with a curved bottom. Probably won't be as low though.

I have that style as well, they work as long as the dovetail is open-ended as it must slide on from one end.

The rail mount adapter scratched each time it slipped off under pressure.

I will need to touch it up when I get it sorted.

Thanks all for your help on this. I bought the new long rail from Ebay. I cut it down using a cut off blade on my angle grinder and touched it up with some paint, along with touching up the dove tail I scratched up.

Very happy with the outcome.
