How much adjustment / range with a 1" scope tube?

Post by jeener » 01 May 2014, 9:40 am

Hi all,

So they make larger scope tubes for more internal adjustment so you can shoot longer range.

Question is, how far with the adjustments available in a 1"scope tube can you shoot and still be zeroed on your target without running out of adjustment?

I know it will vary with what calibre you're shooting and how flat it shoots but just an average? Or for something common like .308?

500m? 800? more?

Thanks.

I can tell you it's definitely more than 500m.

(know this from shooting at my local range)

Never shot further to test it though...

How much adjustment you'd get varies by scope and you could find out from the manufacturer of a specific scope. If you think you'll run out of adjustment use an elevated base. You'll get a lot more adjustment range out of your scope.

It will depend on a couple of factors, the biggest is the scope itself. Some 1" tube scopes have very little adjustment range, others have lots. This can depend on the magnification range of the scope too.

If you think you'll be needing lots of MOA Because you using one rifle to shoot from 100m to 1200m you'd better pay the extra and buy a scope with lots of adjustment.

Something like a weaver T36 has only 40 MOA adjustment

Something like a 168gr HPBT out of a .308 if zerod at 100m would drop something like 26moa at 800 y, that could see your scope top out but only if your scope is in the center of the windage adjustment, crank on enough windage for a 20mph wind at that range and you'll shorten what's available in your elevation

Now put the same scope on a 30 MOA rail and you'll probably still get it zero'd at 100y but you'll add that 30 MOA to the top of the range giving you all 40 MOA to play with

That's pretty simplified but I hope some of that makes sense.

Thanks guys.

Don't need it right now but am looking at a new scope and thinking about what I'll need in the future.

Thanks for the long answer Chronos.

I see now that you have to dig into the specs of some scopes to see how much MOA adjustment they have, if they list it at all...

More research for me to do on the scopes and rails.

I can tell you my Bushnell 6500 4.5-30x50 has 50" of elevation and windage adjustment at 100m.

It's 1/4 MOA adjustments, works out to be 52.35 MOA. 30mm tube on that one.

My Bushnell Elite 8-32x40 has 26" of adjustment at 100m. 1" tube on that.

Yes an no.

That's not to say that a 30mm tube will always have double the adjustment of a 1"tube.

The Elite 6500 is a higher level of scope than the standard Elite, and was about twice the price.

Part of the cost is obviously the glass and coatings and other things, I'm don't know the inner technical workings and specification of the scopes but I suspect there more going on in the 6500 as well given the nature of the scope.
