Reckon the recoil from a 5kg 308 will destroy it?

Hahaha u blokes are a terrible influence. I bought the scope for a whopping $95 clams, for a very specific purpose; to comply with the “classic modified” category in an upcoming novel telescopic match on the 26th Nov. It’s going on an m17 milsurp. I wasn’t going to test it until come the day - but I think that’s a pretty dumb idea haha. Think I must see if I can destroy it beforehand…

I am sure that any bullet from a 308 could destroy your Nikko Stirling. Probably a good thing though....

I bought a Chinese Vision King scope to see if I could shake it to bits, started on a 7mm Rem Mag, no issues so I moved up to a 375 H&H, still nothing. Moved it onto a 450 Rigby and still no issues. Still a rubbish scope with terrible glass but quite rugged, I was surprised.

I run quite a few nikko stirlings on my rifles. I put them on to get me going with the intent of replacing them as they break because according to all the "experts" out there they are rubbish. 30 years later Im still waiting for one to crap out....they must be a pretty good scope because all the "experts" can do is compare them with high end units to try and justify their claims. Nothing like comparing apples with apples ay..

There was a period where some Nikko Sterling scopes were made in Korea instead of Japan. They appeared to be of superior quality and durability.
Look for a stamping on the underside of the tube.
After that most of the bottom end scopes were made in China with no attribution.

I hunt and do club level comps whats prs. Obviously the bench guys dont use them. When I do notice someone at the range using a nikko ill have a chat with them and ask how they find them. Havnt had anyone complain. Id guess a 6000$ nikko wouldnt be far off a 6000$ leupold or what ever if they actually made one..

barricade benchrest? aw hells no, not my cup-a-tea. Nah mate I'm a TR and SR shooter; under NRAA/NSWRA. We don't do any scope as part of grade - but basically once a month, to break up grade, the MRCA do either a rimfire or telescopic match. Bit of fun.

Strips of Coke can to shim it.
Better way would to machine some shims out of plastic.

Dear in2anity
That scope isn't old it is ancient.
It will date from the 50's or early 60's and it is mostly a Japanese rendition of a pre-war German style scope, without the quality, largely intended for the bottom end of the US market.
First thing to do is to shake it vigorously near your ear (provided your hearing isn't too far gone) and listen for any rattles. If you can hear any then forget about getting any joy from that scope.
The failure points will be perished internal seals and the screwed on objective bell.

Thanks SS - seems intact currently. Not sure if it'll stand up to fullbore ammo recoil out of a 30cal milsurp though... soon to find out. Just waiting on some delrin ring reducers from brownells to bring her up to 1"

I don't think that's a Tiara model. It looks more like a Nikko Stirling 4 x32 . If that's a Japanese made scope it could be ok on a 22 . The turret cap looks damaged . It should have writing on the ocular housing .

I can assure your that my scope (not necessarily the one pictured a couple of posts above, although I think it’s the same) is a tiara 4x28, because its bloody engraved on top of it as shown!

And I damn well hope it “could be ok” on a 22! Otherwise it can’t be good for much!

Ok it is a Tiara model and it is made in Japan so it could be more rugged than later model scopes. Give it a run a fixed power scope is always more potentially rugged inside than a similar quality variable . It's a 22 scope really so don't be too disappointed if it does fail under 308 recoil . I have had cheap scopes fail on air rifles and 22's . I had one scope fall apart " in the box " .
