Number 1/ Because with a FFP scope at the lowest power at short ranges it's hard to see the reticle but if you switch on the Illumination you have a nice center aiming spot even in daylight . In dim light a black reticle on a black pig is impossible for me to see . I am one of the Illuminati .

I have a few illuminated reticles, I find them entirely pointless and not worth putting a battery in.
I can see very specific situations where they might be handy, but they're not for me.

This is one of the situations I consider it useful, but it makes more sense to me to avoid FFP scopes altogether and not worry about trying to make the reticle usable.

I prefer the versatility of being able to adjust the reticle to suit my situation rather than being forced to work with a fixed reticle.
Yesterday I was shooting .22LR at 300m and 500yd. At 300m the drop I calculated to be 25 minutes. The fourth dot on my SFP BDC reticle is an 11.4 minute holdover. So I wound the zoom back to 9-power, doubling the BDC to 22.8 minutes, and held on the target. It's a couple minutes low on the target as expected. If it mattered I could also dial up 2.5 minutes, but I wasn't trying to shoot well, just confirming the hold before moving out to 500yd.

At 500yd I calculated the drop would be (on a different rifle with a different zero) 80MoA, so I wound the zoom back to 4.5-power, quadrupling the top of the duplex post to 61.6MoA, then dialed up 19 minutes on the turret.

On the Ruger American I simply dialed up 70 minutes as it is zeroed at 200m (the Precision is zeroed at 182m) at the bottom of the turret with the adjustable mount giving me the full 105 minutes of elevation in the turret. The Precision only has the OEM 30-minute rail.

I like to use mils and on the turrets but it's hard to find a scope I want that is SFP and has mils on reticle and the turrets .
The FFP reticle is still very usable at the higher powers which is what you use at longer ranges 90% of the time anyway .
I only have illumination on the 6 to 24 Vortex on my varmint / sniper rifle . I don't bother with it on any other gun .

My scopes have fine, etched reticles which are magic in daylight but virtually invisible toward dusk particularly, as has been mentioned, against a dark target.
Stepless illumination is the perfect accompaniment to etched reticles.

I bought a Leupold VX-R years ago, I found it worthless. If it was so dark that seeing the crosshair was a challenge, turning the dot on caused your eye to adjust to that light and the target was then too hard to make out. Took the battery out and never replaced it.

7 for me. But fear it's only a matter of time that 4. kicks in and WAPOL ban them. Allows me to see the reticule aim point at full power on my FFP Nightforce NX8 at 32x on my long range rifle. Otherwise I'm struggling with the fine reticule. The illumination helps thicken the lines for me. At lower magnifications it's not really required, but very handy with a cluttered back drop or dark targets.

All other rifles are non illuminated, but I think for a dedicated scrub gun for pigs etc, the illuminated lower power scopes would be helpful. That or get a red dot.

I have a scope with an illuminated centre dot in a plain duplex reticle. I like it and suits my purposes, though it isn't a deal-breaker if I were to buy another scope

I prefer the smaller centre dot illumination to some of the illuminated FFP reticles where half the Christmas tree is bright red. I might find that a bit intrusive personally

I have the red dot on my scopes. I have looked at a Vortex that had the small circle and do not like it as much. Bit intrusive I think.

The variable power of the dot is very useful, as best settings will vary due to avaialble light. Just before dark, hunting in twilight, a low power red dot is awesome on dark targets like black pigs. In good light, a higher power is better. And for me, there is no doubt that target acquisition on moving targets, in bright light or twilight, is much quicker with the illuminated reticle.

My Z6 Swarovski has a great system. It has two "on" positions, each one able to be set at whatever brightness you choose, and this setting is stored even when battery removed. I set one for daylight, and one for twilight. It has an "off" position of course, but also turns itself off automatically when the rifle is laying on its side, or upright such as over your shoulder on a sling. Switch is not on a turret like many are, but on top of the eyepiece, where it is easily operated by my thumb. I remove the battery when the rifle is not needed, to preserve its life, and to safeguard against a battery leaking.

Hard to beat. Cannot see myself being without it ever again.

That’s an impressive bit of kit.
Just looking at the prices though. My wife would kill me and would not grant me a quick death either. She’d take her time.

….but still probably worth it. That is one nice scope.

It is excellent, but certainly not in the "budget" category. I have the 1-6, and the field of view at 100m on 1 power is 42.5m. Combine that with the excellent glass, and the illumintaed reticle and it is superb in the scrub, and still offers a maximum of 6 power if that is needed. Handy for sighting in, but that is about it for me on the BLR. In the field 4 or 5 power is all I use when I have a rest.
