Cantilever Mounts

Post by MeccaOz » 31 May 2014, 12:17 am

Has anyone tried these kinds of mounts out ? I think this kind of setup would work for me, on a Ruger Gunsite scout, because it doesnt go as closely over the ejection port like the XS rail does and yet it also allows me to get a near normal eye relief scope to work without removing the rear ghostring sight. heres a picture of what I'm trying to do. Any comments or foreseeable problems would be very much appreciated, along with any comments about rail systems, since I have never used one.

Thanks Wrenchman, well sounds like they will take a pounding then, I have to admit doubling up on the tightening points makes it seem a bit less stable ...

I've always wondered about that too.

Seems like there'd be a bit of backwards dip/flex in the thing that might lead to your reticle moving up?

Yeah, lol at least Im not alone in my doubts. They do get good reviews but im still hesitant about it all. Best I go annoy my handgunning mate to see if I can borrow a handgun scope and see if setting it up in the original scout configuration works for me.

Tricky to see in the photo there... Is the rear of the scope above the rear iron sight there or is it offset?

The front of the scope looks centred but the rear looks offset to the side? Just something funny in the photo angle I guess?

AFAIK a cantilever mount system is the only thing that's going to do this for you regardless, if you want a normal scope setup.

The alternative is a long eye-relief scope mounted forward on the rail in a true 'scout rifle' setup, but I'm sure you're already aware of that.

One more option but this is some dicking around...

You could replace the factory rail with a full length rail, removing the rear ghost ring.

Mount your scope on see-through raised rings, then add a few rear sight to the rail.

Not saying it's better, but it's an option.

I'm pretty sure I've see see-through cantilever mounts anyway?

Get one of those for mounting the scope and use the existing iron sights without needing to buy a new rail and sights again.

Thanks heaps for the input guys.

I'm going to try out a Scout scope first and see how it goes.

If it doesn't work out for me, I guess I'll re-evaluate then.

I've used both ways.

I found the Scout setup does take a little getting used too. Having a lot more peripheral vision outside the scope the first time you use a long eye-relief scope feels weird. Or it did to me anyway.

One you get used to it though and can just focus on the scope you don't really notice. It's not distracting then anyway so it's just as good.

Thanks squirrelhunter, I have used handgun scopes before and loved them, but i have to admit using them on something with the reach of a 308 might be a bit different.
