Adjustable lense system for target shooting

Post by perentie » 21 Apr 2025, 8:14 am

Years ago I saw a Fullbore shooter with some kind of lens system in front of his shooting eye using peep sights.
Does anyone use these or know what they are called or where to buy them.? I would like to give it a go.

An actual lens or just an aperture? I use an aperture stuck to my glasses when using open sights to bring the sights into better definition. You can try punching a tiny hole through a piece of insulation tape if you want to see if it helps you, try a hole of about 2mm. Or order the EyePal online for around $40. I ended up drilling a hole through the glasses as they tend to fog up. You'll need different glasses for different disciplines as they all place your line of sight in different places in your glasses. Some of the shooters at the pistol club have adjustable apertures that hang on a frame in front of their glasses, but those are several hundred dollars.

IMHO, you should try a much smaller hole. Unfortunately, this is what those expensive adjustable aperture sights are for. Fullbore shooters use about a 1.1, 1.2mm aperture in their adjustable peeps but the tricky thing to remember, is that a lot depends on how close the eye is, to the hole. Prone shooters might get as close as the width of two fingers before recoil drives the whole thing in to an eyebrow.
Sorry this is longwinded but it's a bit tricky.
p.s. you might find a peep sight here

Thanks. I think those Knobloch ones must be the ones I saw. I have an aperture front and rear sight on all my rifles. The front can be changed for different sizes and shapes and the rears have a rotating disc in the eyepiece with different hole sizes. I can get the front sight sharp OK but the target gets very out of focus. I thought the lens type might bring the target into focus more, then use the aperture to sharpen up the front sight again..
Might need to do some more research.
Thanks again for the replies.

perentie,
Are you talking about fullbore?
FWIW, I had to install a lens in front of the foresight, to make the aiming mark clear. It was called a "Dioptre" and they come in different magnifications.

I have a set similar to the knobloch (not sure what brand) with the adjustable iris and eye shield. The iris helps you bring the front and rear sight into focus together.

No, I am talking Black Powder target rifle but thats a good idea. I used to shoot full bore many years ago with an old Omark and I do remember one of the members had that Diopter front sight but I did not ask what it was for. I had to give up as I found the getting up and down too hard.
I shoot sitting on a stool with cross sticks now. I will see if they are available and if I can fit it to the tunnel sight I have.
Thanks.

Try talking to The Q-Store. They are sure to have them. Also called an Eagle Eye. Could not think of it yesterday.
