Scope or Red Dot for 22 lever action.

My nephew has acquired a .22 lever action (Henry) and asked me about a scope/mounts or red dot and mounts. In all my years of playing with a lever action, I have always used just open sights, so I am not so familiar with the alternatives. Ideas anyone?

Really depends on what type of shooting he intends to engage in.
I'd be inclined to use something like a 1 - 4x optic, rather than a red-dot.

Just sold my 22LR lever action and looked at a nice Bushnell red dot, can't remember the model. Was only a few hundred $. Depending what your doing with the rifle I don't think you need to spend too much on these things

22 lever so I’m assuming just fun snap shooting relatively close ranges. It’s not a target rifle.

I like to mount the red or or reflex sight or whatever on the dovetail that holds the rear sight. You can tap that sight out and fit a small rail.
It’s fast target acquisition and with practice you have both eyes open and you really just learn to see the dot on the target. You don’t notice the housing. A holographic sight better still, but they look silly on lever actions. They look great on an ar15 or modern firearms but trailing of here’s a link to what I’m blabbering about https://www.dangernoodle.com.au/buy/dovetail-picatinny-rail

Note the grub screws either end. So you can accommodate elevation on the tapered barrel.

I recommend this method for optimal fun.

The lad just wants to use it for plinking and maybe a bit of bunny busting on his dads farm. Have been offered a 4X scope but the use of a red dot might be a bit quicker for the bunnies. Still thinking and looking.

Just had a look at the Ozzie Reviews on this subject. Quite interesting as he was using a cheap Bushnell (his words, not mine).
Might be worth getting one to try.

Ahh just some complications with my gender transition Mick.
I specifically requested triple D cup in tall leggy blonde.
I shouldn't have cheaped out on a dodgy backyard surgeon.

No not really. I'm still as handsome and masculine as ever. Just stepped away for a while because it was getting a bit ugly in here I guess. Myself included.

I know that feeling. Did it myself for about a year.

Indeed. Gender reassignment surgery is a difficult journey to affirmation.

It was the high pitched voice that gave it away for me....wasn't it?

Henry's have a 3/8" Grooved Receiver so you need an adapter to fit most red dots which just add height and look ugly.

Frankly anything looks ugly on a lever action apart from skinner sights.
The additional height though on a buttstock with no comb. Yes granted. Just have to get used to it and you do. It’s just a set up you acclimatise to with repetition.

Hey what can you do :unknown: you want to fit some jerry rigged comb riser to that lever action. See now you’re in Bubba’s rhealm with your monstrosity. Might as well glue some pic rails on there and a laser. A flashlight. There’s no going back now. You’ve really f***ed it up.

Yeh, used a peep on my 30.30 for couple of years. They are sort of a "forgotten" type of sight.

The lad has decided to use open sights and has fitted a set of HiViz to it. So far so good. Thanks for the replies.
