Another "First Rifle & Scope Advice" Post

Hi all,

Myself and a couple of mates are toying around with the idea of doing a little recreational target shooting - nothing too serious.

All the advice we've received says that we should be starting off with .22's and finding our feet in that space.

We've more or less settled on the Ruger American Rimfire (.22lr) and a Nikon Prostaff Target EFR optic.

The part of this where we are struggling to find any decent information on this is how we go about mounting the optic on the rifle.

The rifle has a 3/8" dovetail machined into the receiver and is also drilled and tapped for weaver style bases.

Would you guys suggest getting 3/8" Dovetail rings or mount the Weaver style bases and then rings to match those?

What are the Pros and Cons?

And could someone link me to a place selling what I need?

If I've taken a wrong turn somewhere, please help me out. Of course, I am as green as green goes when it comes to this

Cheers.

G'day Spartan,

Yep, a lot of people say 22LR is a good started for a few reasons.

Mostly there is zero recoil so you can just focus on the rest of your technique without worrying about it. It's not uncommon for people to buy a hunting calibre for their first rifle and get a shock from the recoil and develop a flinch.

Then on top of learning the ropes you've got to get over that which is a chore.

What are you hunting by the way?

22LR isn't the only soft shooting calibre going, you could also look at a .223 or something similar and get the new-shooter same benefits with a lot more range. Just an idea though, not talking down the 22LR.

For a 22LR I'd just go the regular rings and save yourself the cost of the rail etc.

You just don't need it for a 22LR.

I wouldn't bother with a rail.

How much tacticool stuff are you planning on putting on it?

Unless you want detachable scope rings or something other than the norm?

Thanks for the replies guys!

Owing to the lack of 'tacticool' accessories to be fitted, I've purchased a set of 3/8" inch rings.

Now to fit the things...

Every gun safe needs a .22.

You'll have fun with it for sure.

YouTube mate.

Last time I looked plenty of videos on there of how to do it if you need.

I'm sure you'll figure it out though.
