Do you use loctite when mounting your scopes?

Do you guys use loctite when mounting your scopes?

I haven't had a scope come loose. Is it one of those things that will just eventually happen though?

Is it worth the bother or you just fix it if it comes loose every couple of... years? How often?

I definitely use lock tight on all the scope and mount screws

I use the blue anti vibration stuff, it might not be necessary but it takes one issue out of the equation

I also use a wheeler torx driver to get all the correct torx settings

Be extremly careful using loctite. There are two types Red and Blue , make sure you only use the blue and only use it with a torque wrench - Dont guess the tension. Personally I do not use it and have never had a problem but I have mounted scopes for people who dont have a torque wrench to check tensions now and then or are worried about screws comming loose on big calibres.

Yes, I use blue loctite and for good reason.

I have a 300wm and the mounting instruction say don't use it, so I didn't. The bloody scope came loose 1 day before a big hunting trip and I had to take a different rifle.

I never have for mine. Shooting .243, 7mm, .308 etc. No huge recoil calibres.

I did have the ring come lose from the action on my .308 once but it was due to me not tightening it enough. Felt finger tight but I didn't do it with a torque screwdriver so gotta blame myself for that one I guess.

There are far more types then just red or blue. The one recommended by Barrett for their rings is loctite 222 which is a low strength variety. A good bicycle shop should be able to sell you a torque wrench small enough to do the job. Accuracy is all about consistency so I set every screw to the proper torque and then check the torques on a regular basis.

Blue one you can undo relatively easily. If you put the red stuff on you have to heat it up pretty hot to break the seal, not an ideal situation

Ah yes! This may be true with Locktite brand specifically however it has become a generic term. There are other brands of nut/bolt fix and seal that are red and offer low bond resistance. Read the label and use the weaker bond type I think is the message we are trying to convey.

Which blue one? cause there are 3...http://www.loctite.com.au/threadlocking-4043.htm

The pick of the Loctite brand thread locker liquids is 222 as recommended and supplied with Barrett BORS. I'm sure there are other brands that have similar properties to 222 but I'm not familiar with them. Also you just need the smallest of drops on the tip of the thread cause the screws are usually small with fine thread so they don't need much. If you are having trouble getting a loctited screw out you can apply some heat either directly if possible or as I've had to do on a few occasions I grip the hex key in a pair of vice grips and while exerting some force on the screw I heat the key with a butane torch. Heat conducts through the key into the screw which softens / melts the loctite allowing it to come free...failing that I beat spit the dummy and throw in into the corner :)

I use blue Loc-Tite on 'scopes.

It's the only gun thing I use Loc-Tite on. If anything else comes loose (action screws and whatnot), it just means that something is out of spec and must be fixed.

Thanks guys.

I didn't know about the red loctite so cheers for clearing that up. Knowing me I'd have bought the wrong one

ditto - use clear or black, it's cheaper than loctite and the bottle will last for ages.

I'd need to be pouring nail polish down the sink to deplete her reserves at my house.
