Knocking rifle scope off zero?

Post by remnt » 23 Sep 2013, 7:22 pm

I'm using a Weaver 6.5-20x44 weaver scope on my .243 win.

It's typically been good but shooting on my latest trip out it was shooting high and left.

Would giving it a "oops" knock against something knock it off zero?

Would carrying it by the scope knock it off zero as well?

Wondering if I've got a dud scope, or mount problems or what's going on.

.243 is hardly monster recoil.

Weaver scopes aren't bad either. Based on a single incident I wouldn't think your issue is caused by recoil knocking the scope off zero.

Not possible you'd just knocked a dial? A shooting buddy has tinkered with your sights? Shooting different load with different POI etc?

Get it sighted in, go for a few more shoots and track the results before you go out and buy a new scope.

You wouldn't want to be waiving the thing around by the scope or anything obviously, but as long as your mounts are secure handling it by the scope with care occasionally shouldn't be an issue.

Regular handling best done with the rifle stock though obviously...

It's not ideal, just carry it with your sling or buy the stock. Not really any reason you would need to carry it by the scope.

Check the screws on your mounts and rings though obviously, you could have spun the scope or moved it forward/back while carrying it which would change your POI slightly.

Gotta treat your rifle with some looove. Carrying it by the scope makes it sad ;)

Yeah fair enough.

Will give it a thorough test on the next trip while avoiding holding the scope to see what's what.
