Next rifle scope for higher calibre..

Post by TikkaT3.223 » 29 Sep 2014, 9:57 pm

Hey guys.

Was having a browse through some new scopes because I am planning the build of my next rifle. Was thinking about putting together a 7mm-08 or 7mm Mag for long range shooting, but am unsure as to what scope to get for that kind of range. I had a look at the Sightron 10-50x60 LRMOA and that looked really promising until I saw the very limited elevation adjustments that could be made.

I am looking for a scope with great optics with 80+ MOA (without scope base) that has a very good magnification 35x + zoom would be ideal. Any ideas? (That wont cost me my left nut...)

Take your example cartridges to a ballistics calculator and look at how much drop it gives you at what distances you want to shoot

I had a Siii 10-50x60 on a 20 moa rail. Had no problems getting out to 800m but did have issues getting it zero'd at 100m as it bottomed out. Could have done with a bit less rail.

It's a massive scope, heavy too. Not as heavy as a NF but too heavy for anything but range work. And you don't need that much mag unless you're trying to shoot 2" groups at 500m and you, your rifle and hand loads are capable of it

Realistically you wast a lot of your adjustment range up close. Match a rail to your scope and cartridge and most scopes will do the job. There's plenty of NF and Sightron Siii shooting F class and LR benchrest and neither have 85 moa adjustments

Am I right?

Same reticle I use...MOAR on the Nightforce NXS. I run the 8-32 x 56 but generally keep the magnification at 24-26.

Something with long eye relief would be good too.

Judging by your posts all round this is an ambitious rig for someone who hasn't got his license yet :D

Getting a scope with that must internal adjustment is going to get the price up there.

You could get a 40-50 MOA scope and a 30 MOA rail and achieve the same thing for half the price of the scope.

How much adjustment do you really need? If you're building a rifle for such long range are you going to be shooing it at 100m anyway?

Just saying, that's what I'd do - Get the rail an save the money.
