Front scope ring coming loose on action after firing

Post by defau » 03 Oct 2013, 11:15 am

Hi all,

Hoping for a bit of help regarding a scope mounting problem.

I'm using the factory rings that shipped with my Ruger .308 and my Leupold scope which has a 1" tube.

Mounted everything up, all seemed well, and off to the range I went.

I found that after 10-12 shots or so that the screw holding the front ring to the action had come loose.

Tightened it up, had another dozen shots, same problem.

When I tighten the screw it feels tight, but then comes loose again. Not problems with the rear ring so I feel like I've got it right.

Don't want to over tighten the front one and damage anything in an attempt to resolve this obviously.

Advice appreciated. Cheers.

That's a valid concern. As long as nothing looks damaged so far though I think you'll be right in tightening it further.

If you're in doubt mark a note or mark of how far you turned it, then if it loosens turn it a fraction further.

Go up in baby steps until it sticks.
Thin out their numbers, Ned!

A drop of Loctite on the thread would solve the problem for you also.

Another vote for this.

As long as you're just hand tightening with a regular screwdriver and not applying heaps of leverage with a wrench or something similar you'd have to go quite hard to damage anything.

Give it another go like you already have but with a fraction more of a turn.

Give the pincer bits (I don't know what the hell the proper name for them is...) on the rings and where they connect to the action a good inspection.

If nothing is bent/warped etc. then you should be able to go a bit tighter.

Nothing wrong with Loctite but you shouldn't really need it for a .308.

I did the same with one of mine.

Was coming lose and I gave it a 1/8 twist more than I was comfortable with... In the end that did it and it hasn't come lose since.

That seems to have been the case for me too.

Took a chance and tightened it that extra bit past where I was comfortable with and it's been perfect since.

User error, not scope error it seems :D
