Need a scope for 30-06

Post by the collector » 20 Jan 2015, 8:52 pm

Hey guys,im building a Remington 700 SPS in 30-06,nothing special just a decent rifle to use.the rifle has a 24 inch barrel, ive got a bi pod and detachable magazine assembly to install.I cannot decide on a scope brand or type.
Budget for the scope is $300 maybe $400 max.Ive done a heap of research and narrowed the list to the following.

- 2.5 -10 x40
-3 - 9 x 40
- 4 - 12x 40

- LEUPOLD- VX1
- REDFIELD- BATTLEZONE / REVENGE / REVOLUTION
- BURRIS FULLFIELD- E1
- BUSHNELL ELITE
- NIKON PROSTAFF

Im thinking 3-9 x40 ( most popular by far) and probably LEUPOLD VX1 SERIES.
What maximum realistic achievable ranges are possible with this calibre, scope and factory ammo and a average shooter.
This rifle will be used mainly for longer shots on pigs, goats and all ferals
Any input would be great
cheers

A 3-9 would do it or any of the scopes you've mentioned.
Browning BL-22 lever action...open sights
T3 Varmint .204 Ruger...Meopta Meostar 4-16X44
T3 Lite .30-06 Sprg...Aimpoint Hunter 1X red dot

....that will do me

Effective range of the 30-06 is more than an 'average shooter' will shoot (or can shoot).

An 'average' load, say a 165gr pill leaving the muzzle at 2,700fps will still hit like a truck at 500m.

No worries at all for pigs and goats.

I've got the VX-1 3-9x40mm on my .308

Have the Elite 6500 on my 7mm, it's a series up from the 'Elite' but some they have some of the same features.

For the money, I have to say the VX-1 is hard to go past. They're solidly built, have sharp glass and a clearly defined reticle.

The Elite is a better scope, but it would have to be for the increase money. In 95% of shooting though I would say there is no appreciable difference.

In low light dawn/dusk settings it'll give you visibility longer, but those are small windows in the day. They dispel condensation better too. Whether or not that matters at all is up to your situation though so you'll decide.

Comparing the 3-9x and 4-12x

3-9x is popular as you know. Good field of view for closer shots, enough zoom for longer shots. More can be nice at 200+ metres, but it's enough.

Leupold is always a good choice. From memory the 4-12x isn't that much more than the 3-9x. About $80 or something I think?

I'd go the 4-12x for what you've described. It will be better suited for the longer range shots which you'll mostly be doing but 4x is still wide (just) enough for some stalking if you do that occasionally.

30-06 would drop a goat at 1,000 yards (if you could hit it :P)
Shepherding bullets down range.

A 30-06 will comfortably take any feral in SA at 500m (or more, picking a round figure there an average shooting might call their maximum).

How's the accuracy of the rifle proven so far? Shot it at all or build still in progress?

Don't discount the Burris, I'd rate the glass above the vx1. It has higher light transmission and will perform better in low light.

Also consider a used scope, I recently bought 2 leupold VX3 2.5-8 scopes used and as new. One was $320 the other $350. The rrp is around $600 and although probably underpowered for longer ranges the vx3 has fantastic glass
