Old scopes vs new?

Post by tucked » 12 Jul 2013, 2:52 pm

Looking on usedguns, ebay etc. for a new scope see there are a lot of older scopes on their which look (from photos) to be well built.

What does everyone thing of older scopes in terms of quality compared to more modern ones?

Assuming the glass is good, seems like there is a bargain or two to be had over buying a new scope.

Thoughts?

There are plenty of good old scopes. There's obviously great scopes these days but IMO the cheapies are usually pretty ordinary, and you have to pay more than you used to to get something good.

It's impossible to say without looking through one though, what someone else likes you might not like and vice versa.

Get down to a store and stick your eye on half a dozen scopes to get some ideas on what's what.

Best advice is to get your eye onto all you can.

Talking specs all day is fine, but without looking through it you're never going to know.

That's the plan. Been flat out for a few weeks but will be heading to my LGSs this weekend to put my eye to a few pieces. Will make a decision from there.

I'm thinking about dropping an stepping on my new one. I can see the colour spectrum around objects that aren't in the middle field of view,it is a 6-24x44 world class taget dot.My old 12x has a beaut fine reticle and is crystal clear to the edge of the field. the metal, fit and machining of the tube is also far,and I do mean FAR superior.

That's always the first thing to get scaled down. Build quality.
