Optics for Anchutz 64 MPR Target

Post by mburns » 17 Mar 2015, 6:49 pm

Hi,

Just put deposit on first rifle, the 64 MPR. Had a scope in mind from goggling, but then dealer suggested another...me not knowing much of anything took his advise. Just hoping someone here can confirm its a good choice? (please) , I'm assuming at the $700 mark there is no "bad" choice, but I just want the best scope for the rifle/usage.

The rifle will be target only, used between 50-100. (slim chance I will give hunting a go in the future, but very much a secondary concern). The scope I put a deposit on (will change if stupid!) is

http://www.leupold.com/hunting-shooting ... j-obj-cds/

My fear is most things are saying this is a hunting scope?

Any help would be MUCH appreciated.

I've got the same rifle (good choice) :friends:
I started with the normal recomendation of a 3-9x for a .22
I changed to a Vortex 4-12 very similar to what your looking at.
Leupolds are excelent scopes, you won't regret it.
I wasn't looking for extra magnification there was a problem with the 3-9 and the Vortex just happend to be available at the right time and price, I'm glad I got it.
You don't really need the x12 but it helps when you want a good look at your shots without a spotting scope (or your eyes age going down hill like mine  )
The reticle is a personal choice, I've got a BDC which helps a little when changing distance but you'll get you're own routine using your sope.
I hope you don't have to wait as long as I did for your Anschutz, 6 long months :(
There's always room for at least one more gun in my safe.

Thanks for the reply, making me feel a bit better about the scope (was quite worried!).
Have to wait 5-6 weeks for Rifle, which is a while (for a inpatient first time rifle buyer) but my PTA won't come for another ~4 weeks any ways, so not to much of a wait.

The dealer was saying that the 3-9x would start to struggle at 100meter, I think thats why he was suggesting the 4-12.
Plan is to buy a nice rifle and scope, then learn about the ins and outs of everything, just taking a leap of faith that internet + dealer have not lead me astray!

Thanks again for the reply, really takes some worrying off my mind.

A scope is a scope really....

Leupold make high quality glass, sharp reticles and 12x magnification is about right (depending on preference, some may argue otherwise).

The Wind-Plex reticle isn't really going to do anything for you... Not much windage correction to speak of with a .22 at 50 metres.

That's certainly not going to stop you shooting though ;)

actually the wind-plex reticle will be quite handy. .22LR standard velocity ammo used for target shooting can be effected a fair bit by changes in wind strength and direction at 50m let alone 100m where rimfire silhouette it shot by the owner

the real advantage comes when you need to aim of after a wind change throws your bullet left or right of your zero. rarely do some shooters touch windage turrets during a string and aiming an inch left will be easier if your retical has dots

You're right Chronos.

I was generalising a bit about the windage but with a rifle like the MPR it'll be for serious shooting and wind will be a consideration.

I retract that about the wind-plex reticle.

Your first PTA for a given category comes fully featured with a 28 day waiting period, that + the firearms registries determination to live in the stone age and do everything by snail mail = about 5 weeks..
