Scope for 300 blackout

Post by StevenB » 06 Sep 2015, 11:43 pm

just picked up a Ruger American in 300 Blackout (had a PTA that was going to waste and bought it as it sounds interesting) and now need to find a scope to suit.

Thinking of something in the 2x - 10x max range, what are others using?

Yep, no need for anything more than what you've suggested.

Personally I'd probably go a 2-7x or a 3-9x depending on your preference.

That would be the "ranch" version, correct? Very short barrel, 300blk, perhaps red dot or similar?

probably be using it on small to medium game, foxes, goats, and pigs.

Nikon have the P-300 2-7x32 which has the BDC calibrated for subsonic and supersonic ammo and is pretty cheap at $350

but I would love to get something like this Vortex Viper PST 2.5-10x32 FFP MRAD

If you like the Viper the 2.5x + magnification is well suited to it.

You might not use the 10x but it's not hurting anything to be there. Only thing with going a lower max magnification option is the scope might weigh a little less, but it wouldn't be huge on most models in the lower magnification range.

Sounds fine.

If you're not doing any close work, like hunting in dense bush, you wouldn't need less than the 2.5 so don't need to limit yourself to a 2-7 or something similar.

Good to see another RARR owner. I got mine mid last year. While waiting I also agonized over what scope to fit on it. Ended up grabbing one of the Millett 1.5-6x Marksman scopes. To date I've only been able to shoot it once, using factory Aussie Ammo 125gn Sierra Matchkings & my reloads using Nosler 110gn BT & Sierra 110gn SP. The reloads shoot around the 1MOA mark @100M. The factory 125's though ended up shooting a .5MOA group @100M.

As for the rifle, I love it! Light, short & very pointable.

2-7 if hunting denser areas, shorter ranges.

3-9 if you do a bit of open field stuff.

IMO.

Leupold 2-7x33mm ?

One of the best price/quality balances for this type of scope IMO
