Getting to the Nitty Gritty

After many years of just using a screw driver / allen key, I bought a "Wheeler FAT wrench" set.

Can some-one give me a more precise figure for using it, to torque scope rings and mounts ?

The Wheeler is in inch/pounds.

G'day Die Judicii,
I thought the wrench came with a list of common settings for different size screws? Remember that alloy items will often have different settings from steel items. Brownells once did a very good article on settings for various parts, so you may want to chase that article up, Cheers.

Different rings have different torques...Barrett for example have 35 in/lbs for the rings and 65 in/lbs for the bases. Search for "accurizing sporter rifle" on google or there's a NZ site I cant remember that has a lot of good articles relating to accurizing. The maximum amount of toque is always 1 in/lbs before it strips :cry:

Thanks heaps for pricking the memory, the moment I read your reply it came back to me that there was literature that accompanied the kit.
(It was several years ago when I bought it, and never actually used it)

I have just finished laying new carpet squares in my "cave", and before shifting everything back into the room I decided to go thru heaps of stuff and weed out what I don't want anymore.
Guess what I found in one filing cabinet drawer ? :unknown:

Die Judicii, if you have the same instructions with your FAT wrench as mine, DoNot follow the directions for scope ring torque! I did and put dents in my scope tube. I settled on 20"lb and it is holding well on my 7-08. There are articles and ratings online. I think the NZ site Brett was talking about is Nathan Forsters web site, www.ballisticstudies.com

According to Nathan's book:

Mount base screws = 18-25"lb
Ring screws = 20-25"lb
Ring cross bolts = 45"lb

King (action) screws
Tikka style lug system unbedded in plastic stock= 35"lb
plastic stock bedded = 55"lb
Wood stock unbedded or bedded, no pillars = 40-45"lb
Pillar bedded = 55-60"lb

That said, I find my laminate, pillar bedded stock behaves best at 45"lb. I cranked it to 55 but it didn't help and its ability for free battery was affected, meaning groups opened up a touch. Just like the entire rifle needs a clean recoil pattern, the barrelled action needs to travel and return to battery in a unimpeded and reliable way. According to Nathan, anyway... Following his instructions has worked for me.

Thanks for the heads up,,, the instructions of mine state "Ring Screws - 28-30 "/lbs

Just for the record, what brand / model of scope suffered from the squeeze ?

It was/is a Sightron Stac 2.6-17x56.

That's the same info my instruction state. I thought nothing of cranking down 30"lb (gradually and evenly, of course). Wasn't very happy, as you can imagine!

"instructions", ---------------------- Probably a (dirty) word for most Aussies eh ?

"FAT" , --------------------- As in F/arm Accurizing Torque wrench.
