Cheap scope

Post by Mongrel » 04 Jul 2016, 8:31 pm

I know its probably a stupid idea and its prolly been covered many times, but i cant afford to get decent scope for now. So i was thinking of getting a cheap one($100 or less).
Any recommendations guys? also would need mounts and rails?

If all I had to spend on a scope was $100, I'd try one of these.

More info would be good. Hunting, target, variable?
TBH $100 will only get crap and be a waste of money. You might be better looking for second hand. Over the yrs the cheaper ones have improved but you generally still get what you pay for. Everyone has a budget but that amount is probably unrealistic.
I did buy a sightron 3-9x40 for about $230 a couple of yrs ago for my 3006 and so far seems reliable & clear. Scopes start at about $200 and up to 10 X s that.
Perhaps consider a cheap reflex? $30 on fleabay but I have no idea about reliability or quality. I would be interested in any info about them myself.

Nikko Stirling make great cheap scopes. Try a Panamax or target master

I'm in the middle of re-arranging my gun room at the moment to accommodate a new safe, I'll have a look tomorrow morning if I've got an old one in a cupboard I can let you have to get you going mate. I reckon you've nearly chewed through the bit by now!

I can't speak for Tasco but a second hand better quality is an option which gets a vote.

Whatever you get don't forget a good pair of mounts to stand the recoil of 308.

The Nikko Sterling cheap scopes hold zero and are decent enough for the price.

It seems that others are having a good experience with Nikko Stirling. If they sell enough of them there are bound to be a few less than perfect examples. My experience with Nikko Stirling in the last two years has been positive (they gave me a full refund) and negative (two scopes failed).

I had an illuminated model on my 30/30. After a few months the illumination stopped working. The LGS sent it away and was advised that they had been authorised to provide a full refund.
Gave them another go with the refund money and purchased a Diamond model 3-9x for a .243. After a few months the turrets stopped working. I turned the turret and there was no clicking noise and no adjustment. Back to the LGS, followed by a full refund.
For scopes in this price bracket it is probably cheaper for them to offer a quick refund than try to fix the scope. Quality control could have improved by now.

Good to hear there after sales support is great but having 2 scopes fail is kinda discouraging.

I was harrasing one of the dealers I buy from who mentioned a cheapie scope on fleabay that were circa $150-200 that are up to 24x zoom. I'm yet to buy one, but, he reckons the glass in these are just as good as the more expensive.

For this person to suggest these, when he had a cupboard full of the label one's tells me something.

Beware of counterfeit Leopold "target scopes." The dodgies are getting very good at this....

Worth looking at.

Sometimes adding that little extra cash really gets you a lot more scope that'll last you forever. (or at least ages).

Works out cheaper than the false economy of buying cheap and replacing it that people fall into.
