Scope for a 22LR?

Post by wade06 » 26 Jul 2016, 1:15 pm

I've just put a deposit on my first gun, a Walnut Lithgow LA101 22LR but need a scope.

The main use will be hunting and plinking but may go to the range a bit.

At the moment i am leaning towards a Vortex Diamondback 3-9x40.

Any personal experience or other suggestions in the $300-$400 range would be greatly appreciated... I'm not into $1000 scopes on $1000 guns to shoot 100m :)

I just picked up a Leupold VX3i in 3.5-10x40 for about $650 and it is VERY nice indeed. Sighted in on my wife's Tikka T3 on the weekend and we are both very happy.

If you want to spend less money, the Redfield is great value. American made by Leopold and very much like a Leupold. https://www.redfield.com/riflescopes/ We have two of these.

Vortex are nice but I have no experience with their cheap scopes. I am a Leopold or Trigicon fan though.

There is nothing wrong with the Vortex Diamondback 3-9x40 scope itself, except it's intended as a centre fire scope to the parallax is set at 100 yards.

This will create focus issues when you're trying to shoot closer.

You want to get a scope meant for 22lr, which will have parallax set for 50, or be adjustable down to 50 or closer.

Get one of the Nikon rim fire scopes or any other rim fire specific scope designed for rim fires as the parallax is usually set for 50yds.

I guess my other option is to get an AO scope like the Vortex Diamondback 4-12x40 AO. I can then adjust it to suit the target range?

Any suggestions are welcome :-)

I have a VX-R 3x9 -40 on my .22LR It was fine at 50 and 100 yards. I'm a bit lost on saying you need a rimfire scope and not a centerfire scope. This one came off my .223. Only asking as I have never heard or in using this scope I have not had an issue with parallax.

Damn, was going to beat BFS to it and say Nikon rimfire

$300 landed for the prostaff 2 4-12 rimfire, glass is excellent and you can print out BDC charts for your ammo on the nikon site

Thanks guys, I've done a bit more research based on the comments given. I'm now looking at a Vortex Diamonback HP 2-8x32 for about $500.
It has about the same FOV as the 3-9x40 but has better glass & build quality plus it includes a side parallax knob from 20 yards to infinity. Thoughts are welcome :-)

I would go the Nikon Prostaff in the budget end of scopes, cheaper and better than some alternatives

Oriniginaly u were looking at about $300-$400. What about a bushnell elite 3-9×40.

At the end of the day the 22lr is only good to 100 mtres. Why spend a fortune as you initially said.

 I know, i know.... I was also looking at a $500 Ruger and went for the $1000 La101 instead

At $500 the Vortex Diamonback HP 2-8x32 looks like a decent step up for not much more.

A lot of people seem to try to make an "all round rifle" out of their only gun when they are on a budget. For instance, you mention hunting And targets. You can do both with a hunting scope but not both with a scope fitted with a parallax adjustment, IMO. In a hunting situation you just would not have time to adjust the parallax, before the game took off. Of course, your hunting situation might differ from my experience, which consisted of flighty rabbits and "walk around" hunting. You might be sniping at a fixed distance, for instance.

Just leave the parallax set at 100m  works fine doing so but I do agree that parallax adjustment isn't needed for a walkaround type outfit, varminting it isn't a drawback at all, may help but honestly I don't bother with parallax adjustable scopes anymore as I'm not shooting groups and can't say I've noticed any real diff with or without parallax adjustment. :unknown:

I say to the OP buy what you want and what you think will suit your needs, worst comes to worst you can always sell or keep it and put it to use on another outfit one day. remember though that more lenses equals reduced light transmission as a rule so don't go whacking some dirty great hubble telescope on it unless you really need/want too, also higher mag shows up your breathing and movement more which can make life difficult for off hand shots at times, anyway suck it and see mate, you soon workout if you've made the right or wrong decision.

Leupolds have a 2 - 7 x 28 rimfire. at around $400 is a very nice out fit. I have Swarovskis on my 204 and 6mm REM and they are outstanding. That being said I have Leupolds on my BRNO mod 1 and 2 22LR. there is no need for high end optics your 22lr that is going to be used for majority hunting but still competitive on the range. The parallax is an issue if you want to shot 50m bench. The little Leopold is nice to carry around and mostly left on 4 power. 7 power is good enough for bench to start shooting some nice little groups.
22lr is the most used and enjoyable rifle in the safe so make it usable.

At a minimum I would suggest something in the 6-24x mag range with a 60mm objective,34mm tube, side focus, illuminated reticle with hash marks & mildots, target turrets with at least 150 moa adjustment, inbuilt level and range finder, night vision, then your bullets will always hit exactly where you want them to   :sarcasm: :sarcasm: :friends: :drinks:

I ended up ordering a Vortex Diamondback HP 3-12x42. The reviews and features all look great and i think the zoom range will best suit my use (hunting, plinking and casual target practice). The side parallax dial looks a lot friendlier than the end type.

The FOV is 28.8 to 8.2 feet at 100 yards. I tried a friends Vortex Crossfire 3-9x40 with a FOV at 34.1 to 12.6 feet. I didn't need the 3x but often found i wanted a bit more zoom.

Thanks for all the advice, will let you know how the new scope and Lithgow .22 goes :D

I had a fixed 4 power on my first 22. But always kinda thought a fixed 6 power might be better. Still have the .22 and it has a Leupold vx1 3-9 on it now.

My other two .22 have a Bushnell Rim fire scope and and AR optics 4.5 x18 on my Ruger rim fire presion. I've just ordered a VX freedom 3-9 rimfire scope. It has the parallax set to 50 rather than the 100 of centre fire models. Apparently the glass is up to VX 2 standard. But cheaper than VX 1 price point. I might have a another .22 on the way. So I thought I'd give the Leupold a go. I'll post up what I think. When I test it.

I've fitted the Leupold VX freedom to my CZ452. Initial impressions were quite good. Seemed nice and light good glass and slightly light than the Leupold VX 1 that I had on it previously

I sighted the rifle in at 25 metres. I bought this scope for hunting knowing that the Parralax is fixed for a rimfire at 50-60 yards whereas the VX it replaced has the centre fire Parralax. I have had trouble focusing at close ranges. It was quite fussy on 9 magnification trying focus on the target when it was at 25 metres. I moved to 50 metres and it definaltely got heaps better. But it definaltely not as good as the Bushnel Rimfire scopes I usually use.

The eye relief and general sight picture is quite good. I need to take it spot lighting and try it low light conditions. But overall I think I would choose a Bushnel Rimfire instead. I think I paid $309 for the VX freedom rimfire. Which isn't too bad considering you have the Leupold gold ring warranty. But the Bushnell rimfire is probably around half the cost when on special.

Leupold “freedom “ range of rimfire scopes are very good and retail for around $330, or I have a Bushnell 6-10x40 rimfire scope with side parallax adjust, was around $240 and also very good. Nikko Stirling do their “mount master” range with adjustable objective lenses for about $110. I have owned or do own these and would recommend the Leupold for hunting as it has a fine ballistic Plex in it with good lense qaulity. Cheers
