Dumb question from Scope novice.

Post by p3seven » 28 Sep 2016, 11:02 am

I received a 4x cheapo scope on a rimfire l purchased second hand.

On the range l noticed it would not hold windage (kept jumping right). Fitted another scope.

On shaking the old scope l can hear a rattle. Sounds like glass on metal.

What could the cause be? Is this scope a bin job?

I'd consider it an opportunity to learn how scopes work!
Pull it to bits and see if you can fix it :-)

Might have a lifetime warranty on it? in which case send it back and they will repair or replace. I know a fella who sent back an old Tasco that had turret issues from memory, they replace them and sent it back to him. I've got one here I'm sending back to Bushnell as it has Turret issues too, I hope I get it back as I like the scope. :D

I don't think $50 "Sabre" scopes have a warranty. Will autopsy it with a hacksaw and burn meat ants with the lense. It could be useful in the door pocket of the Patrol for glassing likley suspects in the woods and fields.

I'm still voting for playing Mythbuster's with it....but using the lenses to burn ants also appeals to me.

Just pull it apart Pete. Satisfy your curiosity and also get your head around how things work on the inside. Could just be a broken spring in the mechanism. Have a go at fixing it, you've got nothing to lose.
If all is lost, I vote for the "Mythbusters" approach as well

Haha... Won't be much left to analyse!

Be aware that as soon as you pull it apart you will break the seal and let contaminants in, will probably always fog up afterwards which will allow mould to start growing.

Will be a fun excersise but don't expect to 'fix' it properly unless you can purge the scope and seal it properly.....

I'm only saying this to support the Mythnuster solution. We need video evidence! :drinks: :friends:

It won't be going back together once l have dismembered it. But do you think a fixed power 4x or 6x rimfire or airgun scope will be sufficent for small game hunting out to 75 m or so? Does 25, 32 or 40 mm objective lense make a difference to field of view?

4 or 6 will be fine - 40mm objective or bigger will allow better light gathering ability.

Usually the larger the objective, the better the field of view in respect to the same power. I have found that the small diameter objective lenses tend to give a "fish-eye" effect. Hence for me, nothing smaller than 40mm. Fixed 4X or 6X more than adequate for .22 r/f.

Yep... 40mm, 6x magnification, or even 4x: perfect for a 22lr.

I have a cheapo that I just removed from my Sportco because I want an open sighted 22. Cost under $100 and is very clear fixed 6x. Even works well under light.

In most hunting scenarios, I'm of the opinion that variable scopes are a waste of time on a 22.
