Scope reticle for rabbit shooting rig

Post by southwest shooter » 13 Dec 2016, 9:12 am

I have a Leupold VX-3 scope with a fine duplex sitting on top of my 204 Ruger.

This is my bunny sniping rig which is used in conjunction with a range finder.

I'm thinking of changing the reticle to something else, which reticle would you guys suggest ?

If this set up is working for you and I assume it does, why change anything?
I've been asked: "How many guns do you need to have?" My answer remains the same: "One more."

Have a look at the "Varmint Hunters" Reticle.

It's going to cost you about $300 for NIOA to change the Reticle and I would imagine plus postage, not sure of the time it takes. Talk to NIOA.

I have two Varmint Hunter and a Duplex Reticle. It doesn't take much working out the holdover on a Rabbit if you are taking range measurements, like half a head, full head etc depending on distance and the more times you do this even at a Range setting targets out at different distances it becomes second nature to adjust. I set my Sako 85 .204R for a zero at 200 metres.

Fine duplex is good for that sort of hunting. Finer the better I rekon.

Unless you want some holdovers for really stretching the range I'd personally find the current 'fine' reticle as good as anything else.

Wouldn't spend the cash just for the sake of changing it.
What is this "too many rifles" you speak of?

IMO, would make more sense to get them to make up some custom turrets, you know, the ones where they laser on the ranges?

Even better if you know the exact distance. If anything I'd go the fine duplex in a scope that has external turret adjusters. I'm running a Clearidge XP5 Ultra on the 204. It's more accurate to dial in the adjusters for hold over and windage than quarter the target in the scope. My only complaint with the Clearidge is the reticle could be finer.

Nope. Laser on the ranges?

If you provide them with accurate muzzle velocity and drop charts for your chosen load, the scope manufacturers can make custom turrets that have the actual range on the turret dials. Only good for one particular load, though.

Must be pricey?

Wouldn't know, mate. Only seen them advertised while researching & shopping around for scopes. Never gone so far as to look into pricing.
