Do you think a Bushnell at scope 4.5X18 will work OK on my 243

If you are under 45 and your eyesight is good any scope will be good.We just spent the weekend ambushing Kangaroos down Waroona and when I am the beater I put my .243 Howa on 3.5 magnification as any shot I get will only be 30-50 metres

Of course, it'll work on anything.
I have them on .204, .243, 6.5x55mm and 7mm-08 currently, plus two spares.
Just work out at what ranges the hold-over marks intersect the trajectory of your load.

Should work just fine.
I've been asked: "How many guns do you need to have?" My answer remains the same: "One more."

Got the same scope on my .243 if you shoot a 90 grain the trajectories are very similar to a 55 grain .223 the 200 milldot is spot on for 90 grain 243.

No, the rifle won't discharge without the correct scope....

It has sensors built into the scope mounts

 ^^^

Any BDC reticule is just a series of stadia set out at certain intervals to give you an angular measurement, either in minutes of angle or mil radians. They can be used for any cartridge so long as you have an idea what your muzzle velocity, bullet weight, bc and zero are. Plug these data points into any decent ballistics calc and set it to return elevation drop in MOA. You can then see exactly where your trajectory will intersect the reticle stadia.

However, just because it says '223' on it will not make it correct for every rifle and ammo load in that chambering. It will be set for some mythical 'standard'. If you plan to use a BDC for anything you should run the ballistics for your own load and rig (if at all possible).

Look up Bladeracer's thread on this bushnell scope for more info.

Usually they only type of scope you have to worry about actually not working (for lack of a better work) is a 22lr rimfire scope on a centre fire rifle.

Some rimfire scopes will have a fixed parallax at 50m. You can use it on a centre fire rifle but will have some accuracy issues at longer range.
