Tasco Varmint 6-24x44AO

Post by KennyA » 16 Feb 2017, 4:28 pm

Hi,
I'm thinking about purchasing one of these Tasco Varmint scopes for my CZ452 Varmint.
This rifle is many used at my local range and I shoot either 50 or 100 meters.
I was thinking about getting a vortex crossfire as I already have three of them on centrefire rifles and they are great scopes.

But the Tasco Varmint is on special for under $150 and that's a bargain.

Does any have one...?
Is the glass clear and sharp out to 100meters...?
Is the AO any good...?

Many advise is greatly appreciated.

Cheers

As with most cheaper scopes. If used in bright light ,such as a well lit range or day time, it will work just fine. Higher quality scopes work better at longer ranges and dim light. They also generally have much more generous eye relief. I have looked through high end scopes during the day and directly compared them with cheaper scopes. I for one couldn't see a huge difference.

I run one of thoseTasco t/v scopes on a highly modified model 2 Bruno for BR50 work. Clear with good adjustments. AO works fine, holds constant zero, and all of my shooting is done under lights. Can't fault it. At that price grab it with both hands. Bargain

Update: Scope arrived yesterday afternoon.
My first impressions......s**t it's long
Scope on 6 power
Adjusted rear rectile focus
Adjusted AO to 50 meters
This is super clear and crisp. The crosshairs are nice and fine. I was quite surprised at just how good this scope is.

I then grabbed my CZ which has a Bushnell AR scope mounted. Hmmm no ware near the clarity of the Tasco.

Bushnell AR is now off to eBay.

it doesn't matter how clear it is within reason what matters is how it tracks and weather it returns to zero every time

Where is it Made Kenny? I know some of the higher mag Tascos that were made in Japan were very popular on the 22 target rifles back in the day and are still highly thought of by those who still use them.

I have a Philippines made Tasco that is really nice to look through too, compares very well to my Zeiss Conquest and Nikon, only problem I have with it is the turrets are a bit mushy and a little suss, so will be sending that back for inspection when I get around to it, got Jap versions and they have always been rock solid performers, set and forget and never need adjusting unless I swap brands of ammo.

The "old" Tasco Target/Silhouette 6-24 x 44 was made in Japan, pretty sure they are not anymore. The one you have is basically the same scope with a duplex reticle instead of a target dot and will definitely have Chinese lenses (as do those quoted by Bigfellascott) if not the whole scope made there. The Tasco's always had turrets that are a bit fiddly and you have to be careful if you keep adjusting them that they don't work loose. The knobs only have one grub screw holding them on hence the weakness. The detents for the "click" adjustments are also on the weak side. As a set and forget scope that won't be a problem for you but if you are planning on using the adjustments a fair bit,( i.e. for target shooting ), you have to keep that in mind. I started out in silhouette with Tasco's on my rifles and they served me well until I upgraded. I have sold those scopes on to other silhouette shooters and they are still getting good service from them at +18 years old.

Yep....it's made in China
However the turrets have three grub screws holding them in place.
And the click adjustment are very precise and quite load.
I'd say the actual adjustment feel is better than my vortex crossfire scopes.

I'm off to the range on Wednesday so it will get a good workout.

Update:
This scope is awesome.
Zeroed within 5 shots. Every turret click adjustment made created a change in the point of impact.
I will do some ladder testing and check its return to zero on my next outing!to the range.
This scope by far is great value for money for sure. $150....
Cheers
