Two distances quoted on range finder

Post by tactice » 06 Dec 2013, 8:00 am

I guys,

I'm looking at range finders and don't understand one thing about the distances.

A couple seem to have this...

Basically the specs stuff will say that it can measure up to 1km for example.

But there will be a * or whatever with a foot note that says 'regular' distance or something similar is only 600m.

That's only and example, but distance is distance, so why are there two?

Thanks.

Assuming we're talking about the same thing, one will be on all materials and one will be on reflective surfaces.

With a non reflective surface the laser gets lost at a shorter distance and the finder cant see it to range the distance. e.g. 600m limit.

With a good surface to better reflect the laser it can range further. e.g. 1,000m limit.

That's your 600/1000 spec.

Is it just me or does that make the 1,000m thing totally rushing then?

You're not going to be range finding mirrors are you... ?

Pretty standard for some of the higher end ones to quote the two distances based on the surfaces, as explained above.

Standard, but BS IMO.

Typically marketing stuff of 1,000 YARD RANGE!!! HNNNN!!! on the front of the box.

Then "600 yard range really... only 1,000 when pointed at a mirror" written in tiny letters somewhere on the bottom.

If it can't range everything at 1,000 yards, it's not a 1,000 yard range finder IMO.

I got a pack of 2 minutes noodles a while ago. The packet literally said "two minute noodles" in bit writing across the front...

Instructions on the back start with "Fill bowl with water and microwave for 3 minutes".

Ditto.

Not that I need a 1,000m range finger, but just don't BS me on the box :(
